NFL NFL Season is Underway The San Francisco 49ers ruled quarterback Brock Purdy (toe, shoulder) out of Sunday’s game at the New Orleans Saints while designating left tackle Trent Williams (knee) and receiver Jauan Jennings (shoulder) as questionable. That means Mac Jones, the quarterback Kyle Shanahan once considered taking with the third pick in the draft, will start for San Francisco. Advertisement The only other healthy quarterback in the building is practice squadder Adrian Martinez, who has never attempted a regular-season NFL pass. The team worked out ex-New York Jets quarterback Mike White earlier in the week, but Shanahan said there was no room on the roster at this point. Jennings took part in Friday’s practice after sitting out Wednesday’s and Thursday’s sessions. He’s trending toward starting alongside Ricky Pearsall on Sunday. Williams also practiced for the first time this week on Friday. He was limited. If he can’t play, Spencer Burford would make his first NFL start at tackle. He played 31 snaps at that position in a Week 16 loss at Miami last season. Purdy was considered a “long shot” to play against the Saints and could miss multiple weeks with an injury to his big toe. He’s also dealing with a sore left (non-throwing) shoulder, but the toe injury is more serious. On Wednesday, Shanahan said the injury happened on a tackle by Seahawks safety Julian Love while Purdy was scrambling in the second quarter. Love landed on the backs of Purdy’s legs as the quarterback lunged for the first-down marker on third-and-1. Shanahan declined to specify which big toe is injured. Purdy was 26-of-35 for 277 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner to Jake Tonges with 1: 34 left, on Sunday against the Seahawks. He has missed three games over the last two years because of injury. Shanahan said he has plenty of confidence in Jones, a one-time draft crush. The 49ers were interested in drafting Jones in 2021, and Shanahan finally got his man this spring in free agency after Jones had stints with the Patriots and Jaguars. “Mac knows how to play the position, ” Shanahan said earlier this week. “He can play well in the pocket, distributes the ball well, sees coverages well, can play fast in there. He’s got a lot of good film. … Tough guy — will hang in there and deliver the ball where it needs to go. ” (Photo: Ian Maule / Getty Images) Spot the pattern.
