UEFA Champions League All competitions All competitions All competitions Benfica have won both of their matches against Monaco this season (3-2 in November 2024 and 1-0 in the first leg of this tie). They’ve never previously won more games against the same opponent in a European campaign, while the last side to beat an opponent three times in the same season in the UEFA Champions League was Barcelona versus Paris SG in 2014-15. Should Monaco fail to win this game, Benfica will become the team they have faced most often in major European competition without managing a victory (5 games – currently P4 D1 L3). Benfica have progressed from three of their four UEFA Champions League knockout ties after winning the first leg, with their only failure to do so coming in 2016-17 against Borussia Dortmund (won 1-0 in the first leg, lost 0-4 in the second leg in a last 16 tie). Benfica have only won one of their last eight home matches in the UEFA Champions League (D2 L5), with that victory coming against Atlético de Madrid in October (4-0). Their last home game in the competition was a 4-5 defeat to Barcelona – one of only two times that a side have scored 4+ in a Champions League match and still lost (also Legia Warsaw 4-8 Borussia Dortmund in November 2016). Monaco have lost their last two away games in the UEFA Champions League, both by 0-3 scorelines (v Arsenal and Internazionale). They haven’t lost three in a row since October 2000 (3), while they last went three consecutive away games without scoring in the competition in November 2014 (3) – the third game in that run was a 0-1 defeat at Benfica. Monaco have only scored once in their last four UEFA Champions League matches (Wilfried Singo versus Aston Villa), despite attempting 29 shots in that time (3% shot conversion rate). Prior to their last four, the French side had netted 12 goals in five Champions League games this term (16% shot conversion rate). Only Liverpool (31) have recorded more direct attacks than Benfica (24) in the UEFA Champions League this season, while of teams remaining in the competition, the Portuguese side also have the highest average direct speed in possession (1. 97 metres per second). Vangelis Pavlidis has been directly involved in seven goals in nine UEFA Champions League appearances for Benfica this season (six goals, one assist). Only João Mário has ever had more goals and assists in a single campaign in the competition for the club (8 – six goals, two assists in 2022-23). Of goalkeepers involved in the UEFA Champions League play-off round, only Thibaut Courtois (+3. 3) has prevented more goals than Monaco’s Radoslaw Majecki in the competition this season (excluding own goals), based on the quality of shots on target faced (+3 – 11 conceded from 14 x G on target). Benfica’s Álvaro Carreras is one of only three defenders with 10+ chances created from open play and 10+ completed dribbles in the UEFA Champions League this season (10 chances created, 15 completed dribbles), along with Achraf Hakimi and Álex Grimaldo.
