Birmingham City have seen a record-breaking deadline day bid for Fulham striker Jay Stansfield rejected. The League One club made a massive £9million offer to the Premier League club. The 21-year-old was on loan with the Blues last season as they were relegated from the Championship. He scored 12 goals in 43 games as they dropped down to the third tier. Birmingham are the biggest spenders by far in League One having spent around £14m so far. Heading into the transfer window, Sunderland's £3. 4m signing of Will Grigg was the biggest transfer fee in League One history. The Blues have already broken that twice, landing both Christophe Klarer and Willium Williumsson for £4m, and now they are set to more than double their own record by signing Stansfield. Stansfield even scored against Birmingham on Tuesday when he knocked them out of the Carabao Cup. Speaking to talk SPORT after the match, he said: “It was only four months ago the last time I was here - last season they made me feel welcome from day one, I made it my home for the season, my family loved it here, I loved it here. “So I thought it was respectful to show respect to the fans who loved me for the season. “I tried everything last season to do my best and keep them in the league, and that obviously didn’t work out, but they gave us a good game tonight, passing the ball around, and I think Birmingham will go places. ” Asked if he feels he has an opportunity at Fulham this season, he added: “Yeah I think so. It’s all in my hands and I've got to use games like this to get minutes in me and show the gaffer what I can do and just see where that takes me. "I’m contracted to Fulham, I've got four years left there. “I wear any football shirt with pride when I'm on the pitch, that’s just how I am and how I always will be. I will always show respect to the teams I've been at, but at the end of the day I'm a Fulham player and I've got to do a job for my team. “My time at Birmingham made me grow from a boy to a man, on and off the pitch… and the reception I got from Birmingham fans at the end of the game, it was a lovely moment. I can’t thank them enough for giving me that respect. “Birmingham will always have a place in my heart, it’s just one of those places I loved and really enjoyed my football here. "But it’s time for me now to take my next challenge and see where that takes me. ” Stansfield would have been the third new striker Birmingham have signed this summer. It remains to be seen if Birmingham will return with another offer. Last season’s League One top scorer Alfie May was signed from rivals Charlton for £800, 000. Lyndon Dykes was also signed from Queen’s Park Rangers earlier this week on a three-year contract. 1. Jay Stansfield - Birmingham £9m* 2. Christophe Klarer -Birmingham £4m 3. Willium Williumsson-Birmingham £4m 4. Will Grigg - Sunderland £3. 4m 5. John Brayford - Sheffield Utd £2. 3m 6. Britt Assombalonga - Peterborough 1. 9m 7. Emil Hansson- Birmingham £1. 75m 8. John Marquis - Portsmouth £1. 7m 9. Mo Eisa - Mk Dons £1. 5m 10. Will Grigg - Wigan £1. 4m Birmingham completed their 15th signing of the summer on deadline day when Scott Wright joined from Rangers. Speaking after their Carabao Cup defeat on Tuesday, manager Chris Davies said: "We still need to do some business, absolutely, we're not there yet. We still need a little bit more - that's always been the plan, it's not changed in any way. That's just ongoing. Hopefully we can get that done. "There'll be a little bit coming in, a little bit going out. It's the last few days of the window and it becomes a dynamic situation. "All sorts is going on. From our point of view, it is not absolutely necessary that we get players out before they can come in. " Birmingham have started the League One season unbeaten taking two wins and one draw from their opening three games. They will face Wigan at St Andrews on Saturday.
