Birmingham City have snapped up Jay Stansfield from Fulham in a League One record transfer worth up to £20million. The third-tier outfit had a £9m offer rejected by the Premier League club on deadline day earlier on Friday. But they have since agreed a monster £15m to sign the 21-year-old plus a potential £5m in add-ons - with Fulham boasting a 20 per cent sell-on-clause. That is more that the £12. 5m Liverpool paid Juventus to bring Euro 2020 winner Federico Chiesa to Anfield. Heading into the transfer window, Sunderland's £3. 4m signing of Will Grigg was the biggest transfer fee in League One history. But Birmingham, who have now spent around £34m this summer, have obliterated that record - with Stanfield's arrival the third time they have eclipsed Grigg's fee. Prior to Stansfield's arrival, they had landed both Christophe Klarer and Willium Williumsson for £4m each. Stansfield, who has penned a seven-year contract in the Midlands, was on loan with the Blues last season as they were relegated from the Championship. He scored 12 goals in 43 games as they dropped down to League One. Incredibly, Stansfield scored against Birmingham for Fulham in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night. Speaking of his delight at sealing a return to St Andrew's, he said: "I am absolutely buzzing. It has been a long time coming, I think. "When I left, from the awards evening, the reaction from all the fans, even though it was a really tough season for Birmingham as a club and it didn't end the way we wanted it to end, I thought it was only right for me to come back here and take on this next challenge, and be part of such an amazing club and amazing project. " He also delivered a heartfelt goodbye to Fulham, where he remarked: "Delivering a goodbye message to Fulham, Stansfield said: "Hiya Fulham fans. "I just want to say a massive thank you for the last five years that I’ve been at this amazing club. “I’ve taken this choice and opportunity to go and play first team football, and taken this next challenge to be able to develop my career, not just as a player but as a person. 1. Meanwhile Lyndon Dykes was also signed from Queen’s Park Rangers earlier this week on a three-year contract. Birmingham, who face Wigan at St Andrew's on Saturday, have started the League One season unbeaten taking two wins and one draw from their opening three games.
