Both sides had gone close mid-way through the first half after a dull opening - Carvalho brushed the outside of the post after pouncing on a turnover, before Cherries captain Ryan Christie hit the woodwork with a deflected 25-yard strike. Bournemouth enjoyed almost 65% possession in the first half, but a defensive lapse allowed their Premier League opponents to break the deadlock. Defender Kristoffer Ajer met a diagonal free-kick with a header back across the penalty area, which Carvalho met unmarked to side foot past Djordje Petrovic in the Bournemouth goal. The home side continued to probe after the break, but were caught cold by a swift Brentford transition when Alex Scott - who was Bournemouth's creator in chief - lost possession inside his own half. Frank Onyeka led the charge into the penalty area, before squaring across goal for Igor Thiago to score his second goal of the season. Andoni Iraola threw on forwards Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson, and the pair would have combined to reduce the deficit had the excellent Ajer not cleared off the goal-line with goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson beaten. The Icelandic international again denied Evanilson as full-time approached, summing up a frustrating evening for the hosts. The host's frustrations were compounded when defender Julian Araujo was sent off, receiving a second yellow card for a late studs-up challenge on Thiago. Bournemouth have now failed to win any of their last eight games against Brentford, losing six and drawing twice and conceding two or more goals in seven of those meetings. Eyebrows were raised when Brentford decided that set-piece coach Keith Andrews was the right man to replace Thomas Frank as manager, but for the second time in three days the Bees looked a solid outfit. Andrews made nine changes to the side that kept Aston Villa at bay in a 1-0 win on Saturday, but the upheaval did not appear to affect his players. Though not a performance that will live long in the memory, Brentford were defensively resolute as Bournemouth cranked up the pressure in the second half. There was even a feel-good element to the victory, as wing-back Aaron Hickey made his first start since October 2023 after almost two years of setbacks following a serious hamstring injury. For Bournemouth and Iraola, perhaps this was a reminder that his new-look squad needs more time to gel. The Cherries impressed in defeat by Liverpool on the opening day of the new Premier League season before beating Wolves 1-0, but the fact remains that they lost several key defenders as well as winger Dango Ouattara, who joined Brentford. The defensive shake-up perhaps explained Carvalho's opener, as goalkeeper Petrovic and his defenders seemed to be unsure who should take responsibility for the Brentford midfielder.
