The club confirmed Harris' departure, stating the decision was reached by mutual consent, but in a bizarre twist confirmed he will oversee their next two matches. Harris will remain in charge for their Championship clash on Wednesday at home to Sheffield United, before his final match as boss away at Middlesbrough on Saturday.   'At the start of 2024, we found ourselves in a tough spot, ' said James Berylson, Millwall chairman. Neil came in and along with his coaching staff galvanised the squad.   'Through action and leadership, he led Millwall on a magnificent run of form, ensuring our return to Championship football this season. Millwall boss Neil Harris will leave the club but his set to manage their next two matches Millwall are currently 11th in the Championship following a 1-0 defeat to Coventry on Saturday 'I want to thank Neil for all his efforts since returning to the Club and we will be forever grateful to him for that. 'After discussions with Neil in recent days, he felt it was the right time to step down from the role following the Middlesbrough game and I have accepted his decision. ' Harris had appeared to take aim at a section of the Millwall fanbase following their 1-0 defeat by Coventry on the weekend. The club legend had highlighted the absence of key players Romain Esse, Japhet Tanganga and Jake Cooper as being important factors.   'We just looked like a team that was trying really hard and just lacked the moments, ' Harris said post-match. 'That’s where I think people have to get their head out of clouds and realise we’ve done well to achieve what we’ve achieved so far and how tough it is for us as a group. 'Right at the end we’re putting the ball in the box and one of the young centre-forwards and young wingers are standing outside the penalty area. It just shows we’ve got a lot of learning in front of us. 'That’s just levels isn’t it. That’s levels and that’s why you rely on players to have those moments and we lacked that level today. Harris had hit out at a section of Milwall fans, labelling them 'thickos', after the defeat 'You miss Romain [Esse], you miss Japhet [Tanganga] and you miss Jake Cooper. Three players that probably get in anybody’s Championship team.   'So just a reminder to people, the thickos, that when you take the three best players out of the team that this is Millwall Football Club. ' Harris had return to Millwall for a second spell as the manager and guided the club away from the Championship relegation zone. Millwall are currently 11th in the Championship table, just six points off the play-off places. Millwall have won 15, drawn nine and lost nine of Harris’ 33 matches in charge during his second spell as manager. He previously managed the club between 2015 to 2019, before resigning from the role in October that year. Harris went on to take charge at Cardiff a month later and has since had spells at Gillingham and Cambridge United. Since taking charge of Millwall again on February 21, only Leeds United and Middlesbrough have earned more points than Harris' side in the Championship.
