The two players made headlines last season when their respective sides came up against each other in the FA Cup, with Premier League Everton beating League One Peterborough 2-0 in the third round. They were denied the chance to play against each other, with the elder of the father-son duo coming on as a second half substitute, with both players starting the game on the bench. The youngster, though, was an unused substitute, much to the dismay of many as the chance for FA Cup history to be made was denied. No father and son have ever played against each other in 154 years of English's football oldest competition. Still, being involved in the team was a plus for teenager Tyler Young, and he has now taken the next step in his career by signing for Championship side Ipswich Town on the back of a successful trial at the club. There, he will join up with father Ashley Young - the former Manchester United, Aston Villa and England star. Ashley also joined Ipswich this summer. Ashley posted the one-word message 'GUTTED' on X after Everton's win over Peterborough last season after previously saying it was his 'dream' to share the pitch with his son, and fans expressed sympathy with the former Manchester United star, with some arguing that manager Darren Ferguson has only succeeded in the game due to his own famous dad - Sir Alex Ferguson. Darren defended his decision to not use Tyler in his post-match press conference as he insisted that he didn't want Peterborough to look like a 'charity case'. ‘It was very difficult to leave Tyler on the bench but I've got to do what I think is best for the team, ' Darren explained. 'As much as I wanted Tyler to get on, if the game had been 2-0 at that point I would've put him on, but at 1-0, I had to get a forward on. I've got to try and get something out of the game and do what is best for my team. ‘One of their players had a pop at me which was bang out of order. We are not a charity case. ’ But it was not just Young Sr and fans that were left disappointed by Darren's actions.
