Chris Sutton Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club Crystal Palace's squad is too thin [to mount a title challenge], but granted their starting XI is superb. They are well-organised with their back three of Chris Richards, Maxence Lacroix and Marc Guehi but they are missing Eberechi Eze, there's no doubt about that. Oliver Glasner did an interview where he said there is too much onus on systems and not enough on habits. His philosophy is to go in, assess the players that he has and try to get the best out of the group. That's exactly what he has done at Crystal Palace, and they are so good at what they do. They may well finish high up in the table if they keep everybody fit and keep Guehi in January. Losing star players can be a huge blow to teams trying to crack the top four but for now, Oliver Glasner has navigated his losses well. First, winger Michael Olise left Crystal Palace to join German side Bayern Munich for about 60m euros (£50m) in the summer 20204 then this year, England forward Eberechi Eze joined Arsenal in a deal worth £60m, including £8m in add-ons in August. One player Glasner did keep hold of and who could prove central to any Palace success this season is defender Marc Guehi. The 25-year-old's deadline day move to Liverpool fell through when Palace refused to sanction the transfer, as they faced difficulties in sorting a replacement. With Reds centre-back Giovanni Leoni out for a year after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament this month, will Glasner have to prepare himself for another Guehi bid in January? Ben Ramsdale BBC Sport Will it forever be known as "doing a Leicester" until a "lesser" team wins it? Like Man Utd? * These are the questions I need answering. *I'm joking pls no hate. Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to have your say Palace won’t be able to do a Leicester, as we can see the “big 6” are already ripping apart their FA cup winning team (or trying to)
I’d say it would be like a Fulham when they made the Europa final and then edged themself back to relegation. Daniel, Waltham Forest Rory Smith Football Correspondent for The Observer on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club What's amazing is how well Oliver Glasner has drilled his systems into the players, how quickly he has managed that and how he has managed to do it consistently. He lost Michael Olise last summer, Eberechi Eze this summer and he came really close to losing Marc Guehi, but he doesn't ever seem to bat an eyelid. He accepts that stuff will change around him, sometimes the circumstances will be challenging and sometimes he will have to put his foot down, but it never detracts from the work he does. Is three at the back with two wing-backs a no-go in the English top flight? Not when you're Crystal Palace, says Alan Shearer. Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to have your say Unfortunately the Premier League's PSR rules will stop teams like us challenging at the top for a sustained period. But it's incredible how us & Glasner seem to be a step ahead against the 'top' teams. Joe, Croydon Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to have your say There is genuinely no ceiling at the moment. I think the outcome of the season hangs with how many key players get injured. If everyone stays fit, there’s no reason why we don’t continue this form. Adam, Chelmsford The way Palace are playing who's to say they can't do a Leicester? They are organised, don't concede many goals and in Mateta they have a powerful striker who if he stays fit could make all the difference in games. Ismaïla Sarr is quality too. Josh, Lincolnshire Steph Houghton Former Manchester City captain on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club Teams will be slightly jealous of Crystal Palace's recent success. They kind of went under the radar but rightly so we're now talking about them. They are sitting second in the Premier League and are performing unbelievably. To carry on their form after winning the FA Cup and Community Shield last season, and losing the likes of Eberechi Eze who was a key player for them, is massive. They have been really good watch. You can tell they are really well coached and the players are desperate to win. Matt, Liverpool Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to have your say Crystal Palace Crystal Palace are on a high in the early stages of the season as they sit third in the Premier League table, one point off second-placed Arsenal and three away from leaders Liverpool. Boss Oliver Glasner has led the Eagles to the FA Cup and Community Shield since he took over in Febraury 2024 and Selhurst Park is rocking - so how far can the Austrian take the club? Can Palace be this season's Leicester City and spring a surprise title win? Or will the club's European involvement in the Conference League mean a challenge to the top dogs is an unknown this year? Sophie Brown BBC Sport Crystal Palace may have been demoted from the Europa League last month but they're riding high in other continent-related tables, and are currently on the longest unbeaten run of any club in Europe's top five leagues. Their streak of 18 matches without defeat is at least twice as long as that of giants Barcelona and Bayern Munich, who are next best in the rankings. The run includes two wins and a draw against Liverpool, an FA Cup final victory over Manchester City, and draws at both Arsenal and Chelsea. It's an incredible turnaround by a team that lost five of their first eight top-flight games last season, only registering their first league win at the end of October. Only Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City have won more Premier League points than Palace in 2025, while the Eagles' defence have conceded just three goals in their opening six league matches this season, even though four of those six games have come against teams who finished in the top seven in 2024-25. Crystal Palace fans were singing "we're going to win the league" on Saturday after Eddie Nketiah's last-gasp winner against Premier League champions Liverpool at Selhurst Park and while tongues may have been firmly in cheeks in the stands, can they actually challenge for the top prize this season? In the first half against Arne Slot's side, only Brazilian brick wall Alisson Becker stopped Palace from taking a sizable lead before half-time. Oliver Glasner has become a slight thorn in the Dutchman's side in recent fixtures and he once again got his tactics right when up against Liverpool. As cheif football writer Phil Mc Nulty wrote: "Palace possess strength through the spine of their side - from Dean Henderson in goal, captain Marc Guehi in defence, Adam Wharton in midfield and a thrilling attack in which striker Jean-Philippe Mateta may be erratic, but a constant danger. " Arsenal Arsenal have confirmed that defender William Saliba has signed a new five-year deal with the club. The 24-year-old has two years left on his existing contract but the new deal will see him stay with the Gunners until 2030. Ben Ramsdale BBC Sport We're moving on to general Premier League chitter chatter next with a bit of focus on Crystal Palace and manager Oliver Glasner. They are doing alright, aren't they? Saturday's win over champions Liverpool means they are now the only unbeaten side left in the Premier League. Invincibles soon come? Speaking of Invincibles. .. That's your whirlwind reaction and analysis from Everton 1-1 West Ham ticked off. Plenty crammed in in a short period of time, so be sure to check out some of the top lines below: Everton David Moyes' October in the Premier League sees his Everton side face the likes of third-placed Crystal Palace and Manchester City, before a November trip to the Stadium of Light to play Sunderland on a Monday night. Not threatening enough and don't score enough goals. S, North West Everton 1-1 West Ham Adam Millington BBC Sport journalist David Moyes' Everton will feel they could have taken three points from this game, but they lacked the cutting edge in front of goal. West Ham's poor marking in the box allowed Keane the space to score his opener but otherwise the home side could not turn neat football - with Grealish at the heart of it - into clear-cut chances. The England midfielder was particularly adept at winning fouls - five in total - in dangerous areas and Everton were often threatening from the resulting set-pieces. They managed 12 shots, six of which hit the target, but few of those did much to test West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. The draw means Everton are winless in their past three league games but there was enough spark in this performance to encourage Moyes before a tough home game against in-form Crystal Palace and then a trip to Manchester City. Everton 1-1 West Ham Matt Jarvis Former West Ham winger on BBC Radio 5 Live Everton dominated the possession and looked dangerous in the first half. Set-pieces are something that Everton are really good at, whether that's attacking or defending, so it's no surprise their goal came from a set-piece. They should've been out of sight after their first half performance. West Ham's confidence would've been really low if there had been a second goal, but that second half performance would've been disappointing for David Moyes. He will feel that his side should've taken three points. Last Updated 30th September 2025 at 17: 47 Please Note: All times UK. Tables are subject to change.
