In devastating news on Thursday morning, Liverpool star Diogo Jota has died in a car crash in Spain. The 28-year-old and his brother, Andre, were killed while they were travelling from Penafiel when their car went off the road. The incident occurred on the A-52 in the province of Zamora. According to the Spanish Guardia Civil, the accident happened after Jota and his brother’s Lamborghini ‘left the road due to a tyre blow out while overtaking. ’ talk SPORT's Matt Jones is at Anfield for us and he has given an update on what things are like at the stadium. Floral tributes continue to be laid and some supporters have been in tears as they flood to the ground to pay respects. "An incredibly sombre mood outside Anfield, " Jones said. "You can remember six weeks ago, this place was partying. This place could not be more different this morning. "More and more fans are congregating outside the main stand where Liverpool have set up some floral tributes, and the flowers, the number of them already is incredible. "There's so many fans here, there's scarves being laid, there's an Everton shirt that has been laid down. "People just want to come and grieve, Diogo Jota was such an impressive player, but also such an impressive character and that's why he was so popular here on Merseyside. "The mood is just so quite and sombre, people are just mulling around not saying much, I've seen one man in tears and a couple of parent with their kids walking away hugging each other. " Stuart Pearce has given an insight into the impact that the tragic passing of Diogo Jota will have on Liverpool. He says the club will 'look after the family and his teammates', supporting them throughout this tough period. "I was on the coaching staff at Man City and Marc-Vivien Foé was one of our players and lost his life on the pitch, " he told talk SPORT. "And the impact that had around the football club in the dressing room with teammates was just immense. "Liverpool have probably had one of the biggest highs that they've had winning the Premier League this summer and then obviously the traffic incident at the celebrations, followed by this as well. The highs and lows of life, if you like, are there for all to see in many ways. "Listen, I never knew Diogo, I've never met him before, but the impact it sort of had for everybody, the state of shock is quite incredible because of his age, because he was in his prime, because of his brother being with him at the time as well, you know, two members from the same family. It's just horrific. " Pearce then added: "The club will look after the family and his teammates, they really will. They're very good in that respect. "He will get a wonderful send-off, probably on the opening game. Hopefully, his family will be there to see how loved and appreciated he was because he will be remembered really fondly. "He created some magic moments in the memories of those Liverpool fans. And I think for the players, there's going to be some help needed for those boys who were really close to him, and his Portuguese teammates too. "I'm sure the club will be very aware of supporting the players as well. " Liverpool fans have started to lay flowers and pay tribute to Diogo Jota around Anfield this morning. The Reds supporters will be left devastated by the news and there's no doubt that the stadium will be flooded with more tributes throughout the day. Flowers and a wreath have been pictured, with written messages to Jota from fans included, with one reading: 'The lad from Portugal. " A flag outside Anfield has also been lowered to half-mast as a mark of respect for the loss of their star. Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has posted his condolences to Diogo Jota and his brother after their tragic passing. Gerrard wrote on Instagram alongside a picture of Jota: "RIP Diogo. "Condolences to his family and his friends during this incredibly sad time. " Liverpool fan and part-owner of the club, NBA icon Le Bron James, has also sent his thoughts to Jota's family. He wrote on X: "My prayers goes out to his loved ones during this time! May you all be guided and protected! "YNWA JOTA! !" Cristiano Ronaldo has now paid tribute to Portugal teammate Diogo Jota with a post on social media. The football icon wrote: "It doesn’t make sense. "Distraught for all your family and friends. " UEFA have announced that a tribute will be made in memory of Diogo Jota and his brother at the Women's Euros. Spain face Portugal tonight at the tournament and a silence will be observed before that game. There will also be a silence before every other game in Switzerland today and tomorrow. Their statement reads: "UEFA announces that a moment of silence will be observed at all of today’s and tomorrow’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 matches in memory of Portugal international and Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva who tragically passed away today. " Wolves have released a statement following the death of their former player Diogo Jota and his brother. "We are heartbroken, " Jota's former club posted on X. "Diogo was adored by our fans, loved by his teammates and cherished by everyone who worked with him during his time at Wolves. The memories he created will never be forgotten. "Our hearts go out to the family, friends and loved ones of Diogo and his brother, Andre. "You will be truly missed, and always remembered. Jota spent two years at Molineux and played a major part in their promotion to the Premier League in 2018. Ben, a Wolves fan, has called in to talk SPORT to recall some of his best memories of the Portuguese forward. He said: "It's awful. My wife phoned me a little while ago to tell me because she knew I was a massive fan. He was one of the greatest players that I've seen play for Wolves. "I remember when he first started playing for us and I went to the match with my father-in-law and I said to him on the first game when he played for us I said, 'This kid can play at the top level'. And I've never really said it for anyone. "But he gave us some such great moments at Wolves with him and Raul [Jimenez] in that season when we played in the Premier League for the first time. "He was a great, great player, just brilliant to watch. He actually scored one of my favourite goals at Molineux as well - a goal that I'll always remember. "I am devastated. It did really hit me hard this morning. " Many of football's leading organisations are sending their condolences to Diogo Jota and his brother following their passing. " Liverpool's fellow Premier League clubs are posting tributes for Diogo Jota following his death this morning. Merseyside neighbours Everton posted: "We are devastated by this tragic news. " Manchester United also wrote: "Our deepest condolences are with the loved ones of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre, and everyone connected with Liverpool FC following today’s heartbreaking news. A Liverpool fan has called into talk SPORT to pay tribute to Diogo Jota and called for the club to consider retiring his shirt. Jota wore the No. 20 and the Reds had just won their 20th top-flight title after an incredible season. Reds supporter Turab said: “I wasn’t sure if this was true, but I jumped out of a meeting. It’s tough and I don’t know how to process it. “My thoughts go out to his family, his young kids. I’m reading that he’s just got married a couple of weeks ago. “It’s a tough one. .. .He wears the 20 and we just won 20. "Personally, I just feel like they should take into consideration retiring his shirt. ” Liverpool have just released a statement confirming the tragic death of Diogo Jota and his brother. "The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. "Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. 'We will continue to provide them with our full support. " Diogo Jota's death has heartbreakingly come less than two weeks after he married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso. The pair have three children together and they shared pictures of their special day on June 22 on social media. Reacting to Jota's passing, ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy told talk SPORT: "Heartbreaking, I was shocked, like all of us. "We all love football, winning losing, players your team should sign, but it all becomes irrelevant when you hear news like this. Kitromilides said: “The people that I have spoken to say this isn’t a dangerous part of the motorway. “This is a route that people take from Madrid to Portugal, it is right on the border. “The sense of shock is palpable. It is actually quite overwhelming this morning. ” Liverpool fan Lee has called into talk SPORT this morning and paid tribute to Diogo Jota on air. He said: "He's the closest player I've seen to Robbie Fowler scoring. "I love him, the kids love him. I don't know what to say to my kids now when they come home from school. "I'm supposed to get them new tops next week, all with his name on them. I'm still going to get them anyway. "I'm just gutted. But this won't break Liverpool Football Club, this will bring us all together. We're the best fans in the world. " The Spanish Guardia Civil has given a verbal statement, confirming the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre. "The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blow out while overtaking, " the statement read. "It was in the early hours, 00: 30 BST, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora. "The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed. " When asked to confirm the identities of those involved in the accident, the Guardia Civil said: "The player and his brother, Andre Silva. " The footballing world continues to send its messages for Diogo Jota after the passing of the Liverpool star and his brother. Former Reds player Stan Collymore has posted on X, writing: "I'm sure like many in the football family there's just a profound sense of shock, sadness and disbelief at the news of Diogo Jota's death at the unfathomably young age of 28. Newly married too. "Sending my deepest condolences to his family and friends and everyone at Liverpool Football Club. Devastating. " Meanwhile, Man United legend Gary Neville wrote on social media: "That is heartbreaking news on Diogo Jota and his brother. All my love and best wishes to his family. "Rest in peace. " The Portuguese Football Federation have released a statement on the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother. Their message reads: "The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are utterly devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva this morning in Spain. "Far beyond being an exceptional player, with nearly 50 caps for the National Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference within his own community. "On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where the players, respectively, performed. " In some devastating news this morning, Liverpool star Diogo Jota has passed away in a car crash, according to reports. The incident occurred on the A-52 in the Spanish province of Zamora. The 28-year-old and his brother, Andre, were killed while they were travelling from Penafiel when their car went off the road,  per Marca. Emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region confirmed the crash. "The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire, '" a statement read. "1-1-2 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) of this accident. "From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene. " The Portuguese international had spent the last five years at Liverpool, following a move from Wolves in 2020. He began his professional career at Pacos de Ferreria before joining Atletico Madrid and having a loan spell at Porto. Jota won the Premier League title with Liverpool and scored 65 goals across 182 appearances for the club. Rest in peace, Diogo. Everton have reached an agreement in principle with Villarreal to sign striker Thierno Barry, talk SPORT understands. The 22-year-old forward has a £34m release clause, but Everton have been able to negotiate a lower fixed payment in the region of £28m. Add-ons could take the total package closer to £35m, and are believed to be largely individual performance related. Barry scored 11 La Liga goals last season and featured for France at the Under-21 European Championship this summer in Slovakia.
