Dominik Szoboszlai was left in tears after Hungary assistant coach Adam Szalai was involved in a medical emergency mid-match. The Liverpool star was captaining his nation against the Netherlands in Amsterdam when Szalai fell ill in concerning scenes. Just seven minutes had been played of the Nations League match when the medical emergency took place. Coaches and players responded to the urgent situation while medical staff sprung into action to treat the man in question. It's since been revealed that the man taken ill was assistant coach Adam Szalai, a former striker and Hungarian national team captain. Szalai retired from playing in July following a career that saw him represent Basel, Mainz, Hannover, Hoffenheim and Schalke, as well as the reserve teams of Stuttgart and Real Madrid. He scored 26 goals in 86 games for Hungary and became part of the backroom staff in October. Players formed a protective shield around the Hungary bench as he was treated by medics, while fans fell into a hushed silence as they awaited news on the emergency. The 36-year-old fortunately regained consciousness - with witnesses suggesting he suffered some form of seizure. Szalai was then taken away to hospital, with the game resuming after a 10-minute delay. An official statement from Hungary said: “Ádám Szalai is stable, he is conscious. "Few minutes ago he was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Amsterdam for examination”. Hungary captain Szoboszlai eventually decided, along with his team-mates, that the game should continue. It comes just months after Barnabas Varga was taken the hospital after a sickening collision in Hungary's clash with Scotland at Euro 2024. Hungary found themselves 2-0 down in the first half of the clash with the Netherlands thanks to two penalties. Wout Weghorst opened the scoring from the spot after 21 minutes of the game. Liverpool's Cody Gakpo then doubled the lead in the 13th minute of first-half injury time to put the Dutch firmly in control. Things got even worse after the break when Denzel Dumfries made it 3-0 to the hosts, before Teun Koopmeiners wrapped up the one-sided win. But on a night where football was secondary, the main focus will be the wellbeing of the Hungarian coach.
