Aston Villa are progressing in talks to re-sign Douglas Luiz from Juventus; Unai Emery's side are suffering a midfielder shortage after injuries to Boubacar Kamara and John Mc Ginn; Luiz is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest but has hardly featured in the Premier League

Tuesday 27 January 2026 09: 54, UK Aston Villa are in talks to re-sign midfielder Douglas Luiz 18 months after he left the club for Juventus. They are pushing for a new midfielder on loan after agreeing an £18m deal for striker Tammy Abraham from Besiktas. Villa want midfield reinforcements in part because of recent injuries to Boubacar Kamara - ruled out for the season - and John Mc Ginn. Youri Tielemans is also a doubt after appearing to sustain an ankle injury in victory over Newcastle at the weekend. Their former player Luiz is available to switch loan clubs from Nottingham Forest having only managed five Premier League starts this season - amounting to just 318 minutes in total. Any permanent aspect of a deal would only cost Villa a fraction of the £43m (€50m) they sold him to Juventus for in June 2024. Luiz, who made over 200 appearances for Villa between 2019-2024, is still contracted to Juve until 2029.

His loan at Forest does include an obligation to buy, but is conditional on the number of appearances he makes. Villa are currently third in the Premier League, level on 46 points with Manchester City, and are well placed to progress in the Europa League as well as being in FA Cup competition.
