Rotherham United have announced the departure of manager Steve Evans. The Millers parted ways with the 62-year-old following a 4-0 humiliation at home against relegation-threatened Crawley Town. Rotherham's loss on Saturday left the club sitting 16th in the table. In a club statement, Rotherham also confirmed Paul Raynor, Gary Millsand Ian Pledger have gone with immediate effect. Matt Hamshaw and Andy Warrington along with other staff to be announced will steer the ship for the remainder of the season. Rotherham initially brought Evans back to the club last April after they agreed a compensation package with Stevenage. It marked Evan's second stint at the Millers, having managed over 170 games for the club between April 2012 and September 2015. During that spell, Evans helped Rotherham to consecutive promotions from League Two up to the Championship. Unfortunately it proved to be a far less memorable return for the 62-year-old. Rotherham's decision to axe Evans will also have caught the man himself by surprise given he claimed on Sky Sports last Thursday the club's chairman and board had given him their backing to rebuild in the summer. "As a manager, you never know, but what I do know is that I've got complete reassurance from the chairman and the board that I'll take it forward into the summer and we'll rebuild and we'll go again, but we also want to see some performances between now and the end of the season, " Evans said. "There's no point me thinking about recruitment and different things too early, we have to get the team up, winning and ready for Saturday. "Saturday will be tough, we're facing a club that's close to my heart anyway, but I want three points off them more than ever. " Unfortunately for Evans, it appeared the crowd's frustration with the team and the manager's performance changed the mind of Rotherham's key decision-makers. Chants of 'We want Evans out' echoed around the New York Stadium while supporters also sung 'You're not fit to wear the shirt' in the direction of the players. Despite his claim on Thursday, Evans conceded there was 'no hiding place' for him following the defeat to 22nd-placed Crawley Town. "Everyone's got feelings, " Evans said. "It wasn't a nice feeling. The fans have watched an abject performance. I just apologise. "Fans din't want to hear apologies, do they? They want to see the right performance. But no-one will hurt at the result and performance more than me. "The fact is, the players haven't played in a Rotherham United fashion for much of the season. I understand how unhappy fans will be with the performance . .. and how unhappy they'll be with me because I head it up. "Whether I'm here or not, there'll be post-mortems from above. And so there should be. There's no hiding place after a performance like that. " © 2025 talk SPORT Limited
