Botafogo have sacked their manager following their Club World Cup exit. Renato Paiva has left the Brazilian side after just four months in charge. The club confirmed their decision on Sunday night, just a day after being knocked out of the tournament. Botafogo were beaten 1-0 after extra-time by Palmeiras in the last 16 on Saturday. It proved to be the final match of Paiva's tenure, with his dismissal announced in a statement on social media. The statement read: "Botafogo announces that Renato Paiva is no longer the head coach of the first team. "The decision was communicated to the professional on Sunday night. "The club thanks Paiva and his assistants for their services rendered to the Glorioso in recent months - with special mention to the historic victory against Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup, and the qualification for the round of 16 in the Libertadores and Copa do Brasil. "John Textor and the Football Department board are in the market searching for a new coach for the challenge of continuing on the path to titles, aiming for the bicampeonatos of the Libertadores and the Brasileiro, and the unprecedented Copa do Brasil title. " Paiva oversaw victories over Seattle Sounders and Paris Saint-Germain as Botafogo finished second in group B. Having been appointed in February, he won 12 of his 23 matches in charge. However, the club are currently six points adrift of league leaders Flamengo domestically. It comes after winning their third Brazilian title last year under former manager Artur Jorge. Botafogo, who are owned by former Crystal Palace shareholder John Textor, have yet to confirm Paiva's successor. The club are not set to return to domestic action at until July 16, when they face Vitoria. Paiva is not expected to be the only departure following the Club World Cup. Striker Igor Jesus is understood to be on the verge of completing a move to Nottingham Forest. The 24-year-old, who has been compared to Didier Drogba, scored twice in four appearances at the tournament. Those came in Botafogo's two group stage victories over Seattle and PSG. Jesus also has one goal in four senior caps for Brazil since making his debut in October. © 2025 talk SPORT Limited
