Aaron Lennon has told talk SPORT that there is only one player who would be faster than him in his prime. And despite playing with speed demons such as Gareth Bale and Kyle Walker in his near 20-year career, the former Leeds and Tottenham winger refused to believe either would outpace him. Lennon is one of the fastest players in Premier League history, clocking speeds of over 34 km/h during his playing days, which ended in 2022. With such frightening pace at the peak of his powers, it is hardly surprising that he confidently claimed many of the game's great players would come up short in a foot race with him. But there is one star who he admitted he would not fancy his chances against. In a quickfire interview with talk SPORT, the 37-year-old was read the names of other footballing speed merchants and told to stay silent until hearing one which he believed would be faster than him. Despite remaining tight-lipped at almost every suggestion, the mention of Fulham powerhouse Adama Traore forced him to eventually speak up. Traore would be many's nightmare opponent, and Lennon revealed he was no different, saying: “Yeah Adama Traore, is different- different pace honestly. On his encounters against the then Wolves winger during his latter years with Everton and Burnley, he said: “I played against him and I still thought I was quick, and he’s frightening. ” When prompted on whether the imposing wide player's huge muscle and speed were the reason, Lennon simply replied: "It's everything! " Prior to this, Lennon had appeared unfazed, barely flinching as suggestions of sporting icon Cristiano Ronaldo and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry were offered up. The former England international would have faced both players whilst they were arguably at their most dangerous, with Ronaldo a flying winger in the mid 2000s at Manchester United when the pair first met. Meanwhile Henry was the reigning PFA Players' Player of the Year in Lennon's first encounter with him as a 16-year-old whilst at Leeds. Among the other pacy widemen he refused to recognise as faster than him were Ronaldo's old United and Portugal teammate Nani, former Chelsea star Eden Hazard and electric ex-Gunner Theo Walcott. However, he did also briefly entertain the possibility of lightning quick Manchester City full-back Kyle Walker pipping him. On his former Spurs and England teammate, he admitted: “[It] depends how far. "If the distance is short, I’m still staying silent. ” Lennon also turned his nose up at his old wing partner Bale, with whom he formed a frightening duo during their time together at Spurs, as well as Real Madrid and France superstar Kylian Mbappe, and former Reading striker Shane Long. With Lennon previously revealing that he had been offered the chance to become a sprinter in his youth, the fact that he singled out Traore's incredible athleticism is hugely telling of just how rapid the Fulham star is.
