Illan Meslier cost Leeds a crucial victory with a goalkeeping gaffe that 'will live with him forever'. Daniel Farke's side were firmly on track to earn three points in a huge contest at the top of the Championship with Sunderland, but ended up drawing the match 2-2 at the Stadium Of Light. But with the score at 2-1, Meslier conceded in the seventh minute of injury time after allowing the ball to slip past him into the net. With Sunderland pushing for an equaliser, Alan Browne flicked an unthreatening ball into the Leeds box. Instead of scooping the ball up with ease, Meslier appeared to lose concentration as the ball slipped through his hands and into the back of the net. As the Sunderland fans celebrated and chanted 'Leeds are falling apart again', Meslier could only look on and wonder what had just happened. Covering the moment on talk SPORT 2, commentator Mark Wilson described the blunder as 'a horrendous error'. He then called it 'a goalkeeping gaffe that will live with him forever'. Reaction to the mistake, co-commentator Chris Iwelumo added: “It’s a terrible mistake, isn’t it? He can’t even blame the pitch. “It’s bouncing in front of him and he’s trying to clear it and he’s just misjudged it – I just don’t understand how he’s made that error. " Lead commentator Wilson then added: "I genuinely can’t comprehend what I’ve just seen from an international goalkeeper. ” Responding to the incident, Leeds boss Farke said: “I have also no explanation if I'm honest. "In 30 years in professional football I've lost and won many points in the last seconds, something like this I've not experienced. The game was over, the goalkeeper takes the ball into his hands, arms, time is over, referee blows the whistle and you've won with a perfect away performance. To lose two points, we have not lost the game, but to lose those points is heartbreaking, horrendous, so so disappointing for our lads. I feel for them, they've done more or less everything right. I feel for our supporters who were excellent. “We had a really difficult week, a third game in six days, awful long-term injuries to key players. With the last guys who were there we had to play this game against an excellent side who were just with wins at home, no one else has scored a goal here. To lose two points in this way is heartbreaking. It's tough to take, it feels a bit like a loss. An away draw is a really good result. ” That late equaliser means that Sunderland retain their place at the top of the Championship going into the weekend's fixtures. For Leeds, it was an opportunity missed with Farke's side mere seconds away from going top of the table. The Whites are desperate to earn promotion back to the Premier League after losing to Southampton in the play-off final last term. But they'll need to get these sorts of mistakes out of their system if they're going to get the job done this time around.
