Luton Town are well on their way to building their new stadium with the help of the company behind FC Barcelona’s £1billion. The company known as 2020 Developments has agreed a pre-construction services partnership with Limak International for work on a new 25, 000-seater stadium at Power Court. Limak, a Turkish conglomerate with interests in construction, energy, cement, and tourism, worked on Barcelona’s Spotify Camp Nou Stadium. It is hoped that the partnership will be the first step in helping Luton get back to where they were. They have suffered back-to-back relegations, going from the Premier League down to League One in just two seasons. "Partnering with a company of Limak's international standing offers us a global perspective with local delivery, ” said Luton Town's chief executive, Gary Sweet. "This is a transformative opportunity for the club, helping us realise our ambitions to be a Premier League club again one day. "We are united with the supporters on the need for a new stadium to move our Luton Town forward and we are delighted to be moving into this exciting construction phase. " Work on the new stadium, which has been reported to cost a £100m, is set to start this summer according to the League One club. Luton’s Kenilworth Road ground no longer fits the club’s ambitions with capacity capped at just 12, 000. The Hatters have called Kenilworth Ropad their home for 119 years but their recent brush with the Premier League’s elite doubled down on the club’s need to move to a more futuristic arena. Luton purchased the Power Court site in 2016 and were granted planning approval last December. "We're incredibly excited to work with the club and its partners to bring its ambitious and impressive vision to life, " said Gokalp Kahraman, the regional director for the UK and Western Europe at Limak. Meanwhile, Paul Stephens, the chairman of Luton Town Supporters' Trust claims the move is a huge step forward for the club. "On behalf of our members, I welcome the club's contracting partnership with Limak International – especially one of such pedigree – and I'm sure I speak for all members when I say we can't wait to see construction work on site, ” Stephens added. Luton anticipate that the first competitive game at Power Court will take place at the start of the 2028/29 season. The move will present exciting opportunities for workers with 1, 000 permanent jobs to be generated with hundreds more during the concentration of the stadium. "This development is about much more than football, it will unlock long-term regeneration, bring jobs, homes and vitality back to the centre of Luton, ” said Hazel Simmons, the leader of Luton Borough Council. "We are proud to support Luton Town in making this vision a reality and are delighted Limak has been chosen to partner with the club at this time. " However, the stadium cost was reduced by £40m thanks to their one season in the Premier League. Sweet said: “Our stint in the Premier League will provide the additional income necessary to fund the increases in costs for Power Court stadium, brought about by the extraordinary inflation on construction materials and labour over recent years. "It will also allow us to accelerate the phasing of the construction, straight to a 25, 000-capacity facility. Ultimately, not only does this accelerate our growth for the future, but it will also save us over £40m in abortive costs – not to mention the disruption – by not building through the three phases from around 17, 500-18, 000, which was the original strategy. ” Elsewhere, Luton’s return to League One next season kicks off with a home clash against promoted AFC Wimbledon on August 1. Trips to Peterborough and Bradford follow before Wigan and Cardiff visit Kenilworth Road. © 2025 talk SPORT Limited
