Marcelino Nunez has been given a stern warning after making the move from Norwich City to bitter rivals Ipswich Town. Nunez made the rare move across East Anglia to Portman Road on Friday in a deal worth a reported £10million. The Chile international has agreed a four-year deal with Ipswich, who are looking to gain promotion back to the Premier League. He has now become the first player since 2001 to move from Norwich to Ipswich, with Andy Marshall the last player to do so. By leaving the Canaries for the Tractor Boys, he has surely cut all ties with the fanbase of his now former club. The East Anglian derby is one of the fiercest rivalries in English football and there is a real hatred between the two teams. After making the usually forbidden switch, Nunez faces the wrath of the Norwich fans. And he has also received a harsh warning from Onel Hernandez, who played over 200 games for the Canaries across seven years. Speaking on his You Tube channel, Hernandez took aim at Nunez for going against his advice and joining Ipswich. “I told him, if you ever consider a move there, you’ll know what would happen, " he said. "I explained to him everything. "If I get the chance to play against you, I will break you. "He knew what would happen if he had any thoughts about that. "The scenario around him, all the fans that are there because you are such a loved guy here at Norwich City. "I also told him that I don't believe that Norwich City would ever consider to sell him to that club. "I said to him, look, there's probably other clubs that showed interest and would have offered the same money. " Norwich's sporting director, Ben Knapper, has had to explain to fans why he allowed Nunez to leave for Norwich. Knapper said via the club's website: “It goes without saying, this is a significant transfer for all parties involved. "We absolutely understand the feeling and sentiment from our supporters at this time, and this was, of course, an extremely difficult decision for us to take. “As with every transfer, there are many factors that we must consider, including the wishes of the player, their contractual position, team performance and, of course, the offer itself. "Ultimately, when considering all of those aspects, we firmly believe that this is in the best interests of our club. “We are committed to making what we feel are the best possible decisions for our football club, assessing all factors in the round, in both the short, medium and long term. "Of the possible scenarios and outcomes that this situation has presented, we believe this is the one that leaves the club in the best position. ” Nunez will play against Norwich for Ipswich for the first time on October 5, in the first East Anglian derby of the season. That clash is at Portman Road, with the second meeting coming on April 11 2026, giving him plenty of time to prepare for his predictably extremely hostile reception at Carrow Road. © 2025 talk SPORT Limited
