Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier has announced his retirement from England duty. The 33-year-old was a key player under recently-departed manager Gareth Southgate and won 54 caps over a seven-year stint on the international stage. However, moments before interim boss Lee Carsley names his first squad, Trippier has called time on his England career. talk SPORT understands right-back Tino Livramento, who has recently taken Trippier's place in the Newcastle starting XI, is being considered for a senior call-up. "I never thought as a young lad from Bury that I would play for my country let alone achieve 54 caps, " Trippier wrote on Instagram. "It’s been one of the biggest honours of my life to represent my country at 4 major tournaments "I want to say a big thank you to Gareth and all the staff that have worked with the England squad for the trust they have placed in me throughout the years. "Thank you to all my team mates - we have had some very special moments reaching two Euro finals, and a World Cup semi final and I am sure in the future this group of players will win a major tournament. "I want to wish Lee, the coaching staff and the team all the best for the future. "And finally a big thank you to all the England fans for your incredible support travelling all over the world to support us and keeping us going in the difficult moments. " Trippier made his England debut in a World Cup qualifier against France in June 2017. The former Tottenham star scored a stunning free-kick in the 2018 World Cup semi-final against Croatia, which England lost 2-1 after extra-time. He often deputised at left-back under Southgate, most recently at Euro 2024 as the Three Lions reached the final. However, Trippier's final appearance came in the semi-final victory over the Netherlands, before Luke Shaw returned from injury to take his place in the final defeat to Spain. talk SPORT understands Arsenal right-back Ben White, who made himself unavailable for selection under Southgate, will also not feature in Carsley's first squad. Manchester City right-back Rico Lewis is also in line for a possible senior call-up along with Livramento. Carsley was handed the job on a temporary basis after Southgate called time on his eight-year reign in July. The England U21s boss will take charge of the upcoming Nations League games against Republic of Ireland and Finland in September, with a view to remaining in charge throughout autumn. It is understood Carsley is hoping to bring through a number of youth stars and develop an attacking style of play. The FA will continue its search for Southgate's permanent successor in the meantime. This service is provided on talk SPORT Ltd's Terms of Use in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
