Kevin de Bruyne has scored 103 goals in 388 games for Manchester City Kevin de Bruyne "doesn't feel good" and will not be rushed back into action, says Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola. The 33-year-old has missed the Premier League champions' past six fixtures with a muscular problem and is unlikely to feature in Wednesday's Champions League match at home against Sparta Prague. City are already without Rodri and Oscar Bobb with long-term injuries. "Except for Rodri and Oscar, the other ones are in training and getting better, but guys like Kevin, for example, are not exactly fit, " the manager said. "It's not a new issue but he doesn't feel completely fine. Kevin is not 22 years old, he has to be fit for his football. He doesn't feel comfortable that he can express his incredible potential at his best. "He is training better but he doesn't feel good. He said he doesn't feel good. If you don't feel good, take your time. " Phil Foden, who last season scored 28 goals for club and country and was named PFA Player of the Year, has had a slow start to this season. But the 24-year-old was instrumental in City's 2-1 Premier League victory at Wolves on Sunday, delivering the corner which led to John Stones' stoppage-time winner. "He feels much better. The minutes he played last game, for example, " Guardiola said. "With Phil, you realise immediately when he is happy and fit and mentally in the right moment. You realise he's getting better and better. " City and Sparta both have four points from their opening two Champions League matches. UEFA Champions League All competitions Manchester City have never previously faced Sparta Prague in any European competition. Their only two games against a Czechia side were in the 2013-14 UEFA Champions League group stage, beating Viktoria Plzen both away (3-0) and at the Etihad (4-2). Manchester City will be the ninth English side Sparta Prague have faced in major European competition. They’ve only managed to win four of 22 games against English teams (D4 L14), losing both games against Liverpool in last season’s UEFA Europa League last 16 and going out 11-2 on aggregate. Manchester City are unbeaten in their previous 32 games at home in the UEFA Champions League (W28 D4); they are only the fourth side to do so in the history of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League after Bayern Munich (43 games in March 1991), Barcelona (38 in November 2020) and Real Madrid (32 in October 1990). If Manchester City avoid defeat in this game, they’ll establish a new record for the longest unbeaten run in European Cup/UEFA Champions League history (26). Pep Guardiola’s side are currently unbeaten in 25 games in the competition (W17 D8), scoring 64 goals and only conceding 18 times across this run. Sparta Prague are unbeaten in their last three games in the UEFA Champions League (W1 D2), last going four matches in a row without losing in the competition back in October 2001 (a run of 5 – W3 D2). No team has had fewer passes per sequence (1. 95) or 10+ open play passing sequences (2) in this season’s UEFA Champions League than Sparta Prague, with the Cezch side second for direct speed (2. 2m/s), which measures how quickly the ball is progressed upfield in open play sequences. Manchester City have only scored with two of their 12 big chances in the UEFA Champions League this season (16. 7%). Indeed, both Erling Haaland (1/4) and Ilkay Gündogan (0/3) have failed to convert three big chances each so far; the joint-most by any players in the first two matchdays. Of the five players who have played at least five line-breaking passes that have led to a shot in this season’s UEFA Champions League, three are Manchester City players (Rico Lewis – 3, Jack Grealish – 5 and Ilkay Gündogan – 5), with the other two Trent Alexander-Arnold (6) and Aleksandar Pavlovic (5). Ilkay Gündogan’s next appearance in the UEFA Champions League will be his 100th in the competition (69 with Manchester City, 20 with Borussia Dortmund, 10 with Barcelona so far). Indeed, the only previous German to score on their 100th appearance in the competition was Toni Kroos in October 2019. Sparta Prague have used the fewest players in the UEFA Champions League this season (15), with seven players yet to miss a minute of action. The only Manchester City player to have played every minute in the competition this term is Rico Lewis. © 2024 BBC. The BBC is not responsible for the content of external sites.
