Andre Onana has agreed to join Trabzonspor on a season-long loan. Trabzonspor will cover the goalkeeper’s Manchester United salary in full, with Onana set to earn extra due to bonuses. Sources close to the player say he will earn almost double at Trabzonspor. Onana is scheduled to travel to Trabzon in Turkey, via Paris, once he has completed international duties with Cameroon, who have a crunch World Cup qualifier in Cape Verde on Tuesday evening. Advertisement Trabzonspor are outside the traditional powerhouses of Turkish football in Galatasaray, Fenerbahce or Besiktas, but are currently second in the Super Lig table after three wins and a draw from four matches. The Athletic reported on Saturday that United and the Turkish side Trabzonspor were in talks over a temporary move for Onana. The loan move will be without a fee or option to buy. The Turkish transfer window does not close until September 12 and Trabzonspor want Onana to be available for their next game against Fenerbahce on September 14. Onana played the entirety of Cameroon’s 3-0 victory over Eswatini on Thursday. United did not intend to sign a goalkeeper when the transfer window opened but circumstances changed when Onana came back for pre-season. He reported an issue with his hamstring on day one, and then a full injury on day two, but this left staff questioning what shape he was in after the summer to suffer the problem straight away. For Ruben Amorim, the setback left a lasting impression, with Altay Bayindir selected in the first three Premier League games. Onana was left out of the squad entirely for the Arsenal match despite feeling he was fit to play, with Tom Heaton named on the bench. Onana was surprised when overlooked for the team’s game at Fulham. On reflection the seeds had been sown at the end of last season, when Bayindir started the final Premier League game of the campaign against Aston Villa, with Heaton among the substitutes and Onana left out following a disappointing performance in the Europa League final. Onana came back to Carrington wanting a new contract — he has been of that view since receiving the standard 25 per cent cut for non-qualification to the Champions League — a stance that did not go down well with Amorim. Yet United made no efforts to sell him. Monaco were the only club to register a real interest but they were informed his price was a minimum £30m. Monaco declined to go further. Advertisement Following the Fulham game Onana’s representatives again checked if United wished for them to seek exit options but they were told not to, and that the player remains a part of Amorim’s plans. By that point though, following Bayindir’s uncertain display against Arsenal, United had activated on signing Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. The club, led by Ratcliffe, decided to sign a new goalkeeper. Despite Lammens being expected to compete for the No 1 spot, Onana is said to have backed himself to reclaim his starting place. However, further talks between United and Onana’s representatives after Lammens joined made clear to the player that he would be welcome to search for options of more guaranteed game-time. He was also told United would be happy to keep him. Since then Trabzonspor have tabled an offer, to which Onana is giving serious thought.
