Mauricio Pochettino is set to finally become the new US boss weeks after agreeing to take the job. talk SPORT understands that the finalising of his agreement had been complicated by his exit from Chelsea. The Argentine guided the Blues to a sixth place finish last season, but left Stamford Bridge despite a positive end to the season. He received a £10million pay-off from the Blues, which will not be affected by his new job, but will make a swift return to the dugout. talk SPORT reported back in August that he had verbally agreed to replace Gregg Berhalter as US boss. Berhalter was relieved of his duties as the US men's national team head coach this summer. This was due to his side's early exit in the 2024 Copa America group stage. Pochettino worked under USA sporting director Matt Crocker for a brief spell at Southampton and will now lead them into the 2026 World Cup, which is being held in the USA, Mexico and Canada. The 52-year-old’s decision is understood to be both a football and family one. talk SPORT understands that the appeal of managing the USA going into a World Cup, and Olympics, to be a key factor. Along with the huge expected pay, there will likely be many sponsorship and endorsement opportunities. Speaking to talk SPORT after managing at Soccer Aid this summer, Pochettino said: "I have full energy and I think we finished really well. “Now we just wait and see what happens. In football you never know, things can happen – today, nothing but tomorrow can appear and any opportunity, we are open to listen. ” The former Tottenham boss has never managed a national side before, but had been heavily linked with the vacant England job. Gareth Southgate resigned from his position after Euro 2024, after the Three Lions lost a second Euros final in a row. Lee Carsley has taken temporary charge of the Three Lions until a permanent replacement is found. Have your say on all things talk SPORT by joining ‘The DUGOUT’ – our new listener panel.
