Gary Lineker aimed a tongue-in-cheek dig at Jamie Carragher for claiming he was part of the 'best' football podcast. The Liverpool icon made the bold statement as he joined Kate Scott, Thierry Henry and Micah Richards in the CBS Sports' studio this week for their coverage of the Champions League quarter-finals. In a segment which saw Carragher blasted by his fellow panellists for answering his phone live on air, he was then asked by Richards: “Do you feel like you’re at the top of your game at the moment, Jamie? ” He confidently replied: "Well, I'm on the best Champions League show, I'm on the best Premier League show and I'm on the best podcast. " This was in reference to his other roles on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, and The Overlap's Stick to Football show. But with Richards a regular on Lineker's rival series, The Rest is Football, he quickly took issue with this comment. The former Manchester City defender came back: "Numbers say differently. " To this, Carragher probed: "Wages or are we talking numbers? ", before Richards clarified: "We're talking numbers. We're talking listeners. " In a hilarious back-and-forth interaction, Carragher then quipped: "I get stopped in the street about my podcast. " The funny exchange had clearly been brought to Lineker's attention, who wasted no time in mentioning it on the latest episode of his podcast, alongside Richards and Alan Shearer. The former Tottenham star playfully asked his co-host: "Before I go on, did you have a little squabble with Jamie Carragher? “He tried to pretend that they’ve got the best football podcast? ” Grinning, Richards then gave his version of his events, as he explained: “[It was] podcast wars, basically. "I had to pull him up about the podcast, I had to do that. " Lineker jokingly interjected: “I would hope so, Micah. ” Richards then insisted: "When it comes to numbers, we do the numbers don't we? " And the Match of the Day presenter didn't hold back in his response: "Yeah, they're languishing miles behind, and that's okay. "We like to have a bit of competition in there but you can't be the best podcast when you stand there talking over each other all the time. " This prompted huge reaction reaction from his co-stars, with Shearer pictured laughing, while Richards shouted: "Gary's firing shots! " And Lineker wasn't done there, as he then refused to acknowledge Stick to Football as a podcast. The show is part of Gary Neville's The Overlap series and features the likes of Roy Keane, Ian Wright, Jill Scott and Carragher. He continued: "But they’re a You Tube show, we know that. "Because you can’t have five people around a table doing podcasts, it’s just too many - doesn’t work. ” Despite his seemingly brutal putdown, Lineker's production company - Goalhanger - is the frontrunner in terms of UK football podcast with The Rest is Football. It currently leads the likes of That Peter Crouch Podcast, Fozcast - The Ben Foster Podcast, as well as Stick to Football. © 2025 talk SPORT Limited
