Lee Carsley's hint at a positional change for Cole Palmer has not gone down well with talk SPORT's Alan Brazil. The Chelsea star has been in sensational form, with his latest four-goal display against Brighton seeing him named in the England squad ahead of their upcoming Nations League fixtures. And despite enjoying huge success as an attacking midfielder, Three Lions interim boss Carsley has suggested that Palmer could instead be used to solve England's left-back conundrum. The position has long been a problem, with injuries and a lack of game time for Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell meaning that each of Carsley's squads have not included a recognised left-sided full-back. Levi Colwill and Rico Lewis played there in last month’s wins over Ireland and Finland, and the 50-year-old has now revealed that other players could be called upon to fulfil the role against Greece and Finland next week. When asked if right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold could be deployed on the opposite side, Carsley revealed that both Palmer and Bukayo Saka could also be considered as options. He said: “[Alexander-Arnold] can play there. Bukayo can play there, Cole can play there, so there’s quite a few. "Obviously you want to get the best out of them in their most natural positions. "We know if we play a right-footed player there, at left-back, that we’re going to have to build differently and be creative in the way we set up. " The England Under-21s head coach revealed his preference for a left-footed player in the position to maintain his ideal style of play. Carsley continued: “I think if you’re asking a right-footed player to play high and wide and playing too high and wide, it can sometimes be a little bit predictable. "It’s important that we aren’t predictable, that we’ve got different ways of attacking. " Given that Palmer has played almost exclusively in advanced positions during his career, either as a winger or in his current number 10 role, Carsley's suggestion has certainly raised a few eyebrows. And one person in particular who was quick to voice his disapproval at the idea was talk SPORT's Alan Brazil. Speaking on the Sports Breakfast show alongside Ray Parlour, Brazil scoffed at the proposal and pointed to the Blues talisman's recent exploits at club level. He said: “Lee Carsley, good luck to Lee, he's considering using Trent, Saka, now this is what worries me, or Cole Palmer to solve England's left full back problems. “Hold on a minute, have I been on Mars, did he not score four the other day? "A left back? No chance! " His co-host Parlour was equalled stunned by the suggestion, admitting that Palmer is far more effective further up the pitch. He argued: “Well you've got Colwill there, haven't you? “I know Saka could probably do a job there if he really wants someone in that position, but you don't want to be putting Cole Palmer there. “With the form he's in, that number 10 role, playing behind the striker and being involved with everything, it's good for England, that's what I would do If I was Lee Carsley” While the talk SPORT hosts struggled to see a positive side to Carsley's bold proposal, it would allow him to include as many of England's huge talents in the starting lineup as possible. With Palmer, Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden all at his disposal, the ex-Ireland international admitted that while they are unlikely to start together in the upcoming games, but refused to rule this out in the future. When asked if he would one day consider playing all three together, he replied: "You’d try and find a way of getting them into the team, yes. We’ve got to be creative.
