John, a lifelong Cherries fan. Gary Rose BBC Sport Eddie Howe arrived at Newcastle having done a remarkable job at Bournemouth where, across two spells punctuated by a year at Burnley, he saved them from relegation out of the Football League and then took them all the way to the Premier League. The Cherries job had been his first as a manager, having been a coach at the club following his retirement from playing at the age of 29 because of a knee injury. There were two people who hugely influenced the type of manager he wanted to be and would ultimately become - his former Bournemouth boss Sean O'Driscoll and legendary basketball coach John Wooden. O'Driscoll and Howe crossed paths when the former was still a player at Bournemouth and the latter was 14 and in the club's youth setup. At that time, they were living in the same village and O'Driscoll would drive the young Howe to training. While we are on the subject, let's just remind ourselves about Eddie Howe's back story shall we. .. #bbcfootball, via Whats App on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply) I'm a Bournemouth supporter and elated for Eddie. He'll always be a hero to us too. And while I may not support Newcastle, I am a huge fan of the fans. Any club would be lucky to have as passionate a fanbase as Newcastle. Andy, Oxford Don't forget that every AFC Bournemouth fan was thrilled that Sir Eddie Howe is now a Trophy winner. John, a lifelong Cherries fan We have been reminded that it was not just Newcastle supporters who were celebrating yesterday. .. Avid Newcastle United fan Sam Fender started his gig in Berlin by playing Local Hero. This was minutes after the Magpies secured a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final. The footage can be seen all across social media with Newcastle's supporters page saying that "the tears have started again". Fender will perform three sold-out shows at St James' Park this summer. #bbcfootball, via Whats App on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply) *NEWCASTLE FAN* What an unreal weekend. It started with meeting Ant at Newcastle airport on the way down. Then, the slightly awkward moment of having to ask Bruno Guimarães’ wife if I could have my seat on the plane, as she was sat in it! To now sitting having breakfast at our hotel, just trying to take this all in. Wow. What a weekend PS - later today could be awkward, though. I’m meeting my boss in London for my appraisal. He’s a Liverpool fan and went to the game. I might just go all in on him. It’ll be worth the lack of a pay rise. Matthew, Newcastle We refer you to our last post, Matthew. Reckon you will be OK. You might even be partying together come the end of the season. .. Liverpool do have the small matter of a 12-point lead at the top of the Premier League to console themselves with. Just nine games remain in their campaign for a first title in five years. The Reds supporters did not get chance to celebrate that one with their side at Anfield due to covid restrictions, so if they do manage to get it over the line then there will be quite the party. Liverpool's last title celebration inside Anfield - other than when Blackburn won it there in 1995 - was when Kenny Dalglish's side lifted the trophy in 1990. So 35 years, but that's half the wait Newcastle have had to endure for silverware. Back to the Toon Army's celebrations. .. Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle Liverpool Despite suffering his first big disappointments as Liverpool boss, Arne Slot was philosophical about his side's defeat to Newcastle in the EFL Cup final: "The game went their way in the sense that we played the game in the way they would want. "There was a lot of free-kicks, set-pieces and they are and were today very strong at that. That also led to the first goal. "The second goal was a cross from the side and they are taller, maybe stronger in the headed duals. Both goals came from that. "We have to be better with the ball which is not so easy, the moments when you have the ball you have to create more and you are always waiting for a moment where the game can go your way and more space can open up. "Normally in a game like this in the end of the first half and in the second half it opens up a bit more but we gave them the positive mindset of being 1-0 up and not long after the break they made it 2-0. "Then, they're just going to fight harder for every ball and we did have one or two chances but altogether Newcastle deserved the win. " If Jed and Jamie Carragher were upset, imagine how manager Arne Slot must have felt. Up to this week, the Dutchman's first season in charge of Liverpool had been an almost unparalleled success. But he has now seen their Champions League dream ended and his side fail to show up in a Wembley final, which represented Slot's first chance of silverware at the club. .. #bbcfootball, Whats App 03301231826, text 81111 (UK only, standard rates apply) As a supporter of LFC since 1963 I have seen some good and bad games, but that game as a final by Liverpool was one of the worst. They just never turned up, there was no cohesion or plan whatsoever. They have to look at themselves and stop sulking after the loss to PSG in the Champions League. They now have to concentrate on the Premier League otherwise they could end up not finishing top. But give Newcastle their due they totally deserved to win. Jed, Cyprus Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle Newcastle were deserved winners against Liverpool, with former Reds defender Jamie Carragher telling Sky Sports how shocked he was by the manner of their defeat. It came hot on the heels of an energy-sapping and emotionally-charged loss on penalties to Paris St-Germain in the Champions League last 16. "Newcastle didn't just win today, they battered Liverpool, " said Carragher. "They have wiped the floor with them today. "No matter what happens next with Newcastle, they will always be remembered for this. " Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle Newcastle fans certainly got everywhere yesterday. Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson - who signed from Newcastle last summer - was even spotted in the Wembley crowd celebrating amongst the Toon fans as they beat Liverpool 2-1 to end their 70-year trophy draught in the Carabao Cup final. The Forest midfielder, nicknamed 'Geordie Maradona, ' can be seen in the stands rooting for his former club at the full-time whistle with Eddie Howe and a couple of players going up to him and interacting. The clip has been widely circulated on social media. Anderson was sold by the Magpies for £35m to help the club to comply with the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Newcastle fans were bitterly disappointed but have continued to show unwavering support to the midfielder as he looks to help Forest clinch Champions League qualification. Elliot Anderson pictured in Newcastle colours, before his move to Nottingham Forest Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle Want to see what pure joy looks like? Well, actually, the reality from these images is somewhat more toned down than you might expect. After the adrenaline rush comes the realisation. Almost a lack of belief that it really happened. .. This video can not be played Newcastle fans take over London & St James' Park after Carabao Cup win Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle Newcastle United Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle Newcastle United Newcastle's Joelinton, speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle's Matthew Raisbeck after winning the EFL Cup: "It's amazing. No words can describe how I feel. To celebrate with the fans - they deserve it so much. "We deserve it because we work so hard. Too be able to break that long time without a trophy is an incredible feeling. "We put our names in the history of the club and we go for more. " On Dan Burn: "I'm really pleased. Dan is a top guy and everyone loves him. He works so hard everyday and he's a Geordie, he's born there and loves the club. "What history to be the guy who scored the first goal, man of the match, he's immense. He played so good and what a week it's been for him. I'm really happy for him to get the goal today, to get in the national team. He deserves everything because he's a top guy and works so hard. " Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle We can tell you one Newcastle fan who won't be pulling a sicky today - Magpies man-of-the-match Dan Burn. Fresh from scoring for his boyhood club to help them to a first domestic trophy in 70 years, the defender is reporting for England duty this morning - with or without sleep. "I've had worse weeks, " Burn told Sky Sports after also earning an England call-up. "I don't want to go to sleep because I feel like I'm dreaming and it's all going to be a lie. "I don't get many [goals] so I saved it for a big occasion. I feel strange, I feel numb at the minute. " Will he get special dispensation to join up late with the England squad? "No passes, " he added. "I'll be first there tomorrow [at England training] at 8 o'clock. Yesterday I just couldn’t believe it. When the final whistle went I was ashamed because I burst into tears and then I saw that everyone around me was crying too. It was just so emotional. It’s still slightly surreal feeling, to be honest. Or maybe that’s my hangover? Richard, Brentford I'm 54 & first went to watch us play Millwall in the League Cup in 1977 aged 7. We lost & then got relegated that season. You think I'd have learnt my lesson there & then! My dad can't go to the matches anymore as he's 81 but I saw him on Saturday for my mam's 80th & watched the match with my son yesterday. A great weekend! Good job I'm off work today to recover from the shock! Howay the lads! Rob, Sheffield Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle From Ant and Dec to another famous Newcastle fan/player/legend. .. delete as appropriate. As you could imagine, Alan Shearer has been very active on social media since the victory yesterday. In separate posts on X, he wrote: "Toon Toon arrrmyyyyyyyyy. Ah man. Did the Geordies deserve that or what! That was amazing! " "Liverpool are a great club and will win the league and have been brilliant this season but the Geordies absolutely smashed them today and deserved it…. " There were a few words sprinkled in there that we cannot repeat - but we will let him off after such a historic and emotional day. He has also posted this morning, quoting the club's image of the squad in the dressing room with the EFL Cup with a simple "Thank you. Dave (Newcastle fan in Leicester) I am on a train back to Toon from Kings Cross, didn’t sleep last night, sitting in the quiet coach and there’s a full on party and replay of yesterday’s match in progress. Even in my wildest days I haven’t seen anything like it Toon Toon …. It’s gonna be a fun week in the Toon for sure. Chap sitting nearby said he’s been ‘dreaming about this train ride home for years' (Oh, and I just put on an ‘out of office’ message…. ). Craig That's another Craig, not me. No 'out of office' message here. .. Copyright © 2025 BBC. The BBC is not responsible for the content of external sites. Read about our approach to external linking.
