New footage has shown the role that Danny Welbeck played in Declan Rice's controversial red card at the weekend. The Brighton star, who played for Arsenal for five years between 2014 and 2019, wasn't far from the drama when Rice saw red. Having already been booked for a late tackle in the first half, the Gunners star appeared to kick the ball away before Joel Veltman was due to take a free-kick. The Seagulls defender motioned to take the quick free-kick after Rice conceded a foul, but then the Arsenal player poked the ball away from the Dutchman's path. Veltman followed through and made contact with Rice, sending the midfielder to the turf in pain. Among a melee of players surrounding the referee, a clip posted by Brighton on their Tik Tok channel showed Welbeck chipping in with his advice. "Hey, it's a second yellow, " he could be heard saying, although not directly to official Chris Kavanagh. Kavanagh then brandished a red card to Rice, much to the England midfielder's frustration. The 25-year-old stood in disbelief and protested his innocence for several minutes as boos rang around the Emirates Stadium. Many Arsenal players initially thought the punishment would be dished out to Veltman. Clarifying the confusing incident, the Premier League Match Centre shared an explanation on their X account. The post read: "The referee issued a second yellow card to Declan Rice for delaying the restart. " One fan pointed out on Brighton's post that Welbeck should have been booked for asking for Rice to be booked, leading to the Seagulls admin cheekily replying: "He was talking to Joel Veltman, " with a halo emoji. The contest in north London wasn't without further controversy though with Mikel Arteta and Bukayo Saka being left furious when Joao Pedro escaped punishment for kicking the ball away. Commenting on the Welbeck clip, An Arsenal fan replied "But Pedro's doesn't count? " to which the Brighton admin replied: "We think he was trying to keep the ball in play, " with a another halo emoji. The incidents were the main talking points as Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton. Kai Havertz's opener was cancelled out by Joao Pedro's equaliser, leading Arsenal to drop points for the first time this season.
