UEFA Champions League All competitions This will be the first ever meeting between PSV and Girona in any competition – the Eindhoven side have won just two out of 20 European Cup/UEFA Champions League games against Spanish teams (D9 L9). The last Spanish side to win away at PSV in European competition was Granada in October 2020 in the UEFA Europa League (2-1), with each of the last three visiting sides failing to win there (D2 L1): Real Sociedad (D1) and Sevilla on two occasions (D1 L1). PSV have only won two of their last 15 home games against Spanish sides in European competition (D8 L5), although they are unbeaten in the most recent three (W1 D2), including one in the group stage last term (2-2 v Sevilla). Girona lost their first away game in the UEFA Champions League on MD1, courtesy of a 90th minute own goal from goalkeeper Paolo Gazzaniga. No Spanish side has ever lost both of their first two away matches in the competition. PSV are unbeaten in their last five home matches in the UEFA Champions League; their longest run without a home defeat in the competition since December 2005 (11 games). However, four of the five games in their current run have ended in stalemates (W1), including each of the last three. Including Girona, Spanish teams have lost all four of the away games they’ve played in the UEFA Champions League this season (Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid). This is already as many away defeats as Spanish sides suffered in non-knockout stages games in the competition in 2023-24 (15 games – W7 D4 L4). Arnaut Danjuma has assisted a goal in each of his last two UEFA Champions League appearances for Girona, setting up half of their goals in the competition this term (2/4). The Dutchman has been directly involved in nine goals in 14 Champions League appearances when playing for Spanish sides (six goals, three assists – Girona and Villarreal). Luuk de Jong won 14 of his 15 aerial duels in PSV’s draw against Paris SG on MD3. Among strikers to be involved in 15 aerial duels in a single UEFA Champions League game on record (since 2012-13), his 93% success rate was the highest of any player. Along with scoring his team’s opening goal in their win over Slovan Bratislava last time out in the UEFA Champions League, no Girona player created more chances (4), completed more dribbles (4) or won more duels (9) in the match than defender Miguel Gutierrez. Based on the expected goals value of all shots on target faced (excluding OGs), Girona’s Paulo Gazzaniga has prevented more goals than any other goalkeeper in the UEFA Champions League this season (+3. 4 – one goal from 4. 4 x G). © 2024 BBC.
