UEFA Champions League All competitions PSV and Shakhtar Donetsk have never previously faced one another in European competition, despite PSV previously facing four different Ukrainian sides to date (Dynamo Kyiv, FC Dnipro, Metalist Kharkiv and Chornomorets Odesa). PSV went unbeaten in five consecutive games against Ukrainian sides between November 1997 and December 2010 (W3 D2) but have since lost three of the most recent four (W1). This will be their first such match in the UEFA Champions League, however, since beating Dynamo Kyiv in October 2000 (1-0). PSV are looking to record consecutive victories in the UEFA Champions League for just the second time across their last seven campaigns in the competition, also doing so in November 2023 against Lens and Sevilla. Shakhtar Donetsk have won four of their last nine UEFA Champions League matches (D1 L4), as many as they had in their previous 26 games combined (W4 D11 L11). PSV’s last 11 UEFA Champions League defeats have all come against teams who have played in at least one final in the competition (Atlético Madrid x2, FC Bayern München x2, Barcelona x2, Internazionale, Spurs, Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus). PSV Eindhoven are unbeaten in their last 10 games against teams who haven’t ever featured in a final (W5 D5) since losing 2-0 to Wolfsburg in 2015. Shakhtar Donetsk have had the fewest shots on target of any side in the UEFA Champions League this season (8 in 4 games). Six of those came in their last game alone against Young Boys. In all European matches, PSV are unbeaten in 12 home games (W7 D5), their best run since going 22 matches without defeat between 2009 and 2012 (W15 D7). PSV winger Johan Bakayoko has created six chances following a carry (travelling 5+ metres with the ball) in the UEFA Champions League this season; the joint-most of any player across the opening four rounds (level with Vinícius Júnior and Gabriel Martinelli). Malik Tillman scored one and assisted two goals for PSV in their 4-0 win over Girona on MD4 – this game could be his 20th appearance in the UEFA Champions League, becoming the sixth American player to hit that total and first since Sergiño Dest in October 2022. Heorhii Sudakov scored and assisted in Shakhtar Donetsk's 2-1 win over Young Boys on MD4, the first time he'd done so in a UEFA Champions League match. He was only involved in three goals in his first 18 games in the competition (1 goal, 2 assists). © 2024 BBC. The BBC is not responsible for the content of external sites.
