We asked for your views on Connor Goldson's exit and how his six years at Rangers will be remembered. Here's what some of you had to say. .. Nigel: Sad to see him go and think it'll be years before we can replace him. Unfortunately this generation's fans have less patience and less respect for the club stalwarts and may not realise how big a loss he is until it's too late. Dougie: Rangers squad requires a full overhaul with younger players. Goldson is part of that overhaul required. Alexander: Goldson served the club well and this should be remembered, but Rangers were wrong to give him a vastly improved contract second time round. This is a decision that the club is now paying for. Jud: The big man served the club well and we shouldn’t forget that, like all humans he made mistakes but I liked him and wish him well for the future. Scott: Best centre-back we've had in the last six years! Hounded out by fans who are desperate to blame him and James Tavernier for our failures. The board, managers and strikers who can't finish their dinner are way above Goldson and Tav when looking who to blame. No doubt form dropped off, same as Tav, but the fans haven't helped. Who are we going to boo now? Gary: A dedicated club servant, he faced significant pressure from fans, likely impacting his confidence from time to time. During his injury spell, we sorely missed him in the Champions League. However, his failure to clear the ball in the Europa League final will always remain a mystery. Kevin: Was a decent player, reliable and always a danger in the opposition box. In the last two seasons he became a danger in our box, injuries seemed to slow him and wasn't the same level after he nearly left a couple of years back. Will be remembered but not always in the best way. Allan: Goldson was the rock in the Rangers defence for years. He was a great servant to the club. But as his powers are on the decline, it is the right time to sell him. I wish him all the best. Pedro: Gutted to see Goldson going. Solid, reliable centre-back who proved himself over the years. Worried about losing his experience in such a critical position with little cover. I hope we got good value for him. Cameron: I think anyone who plays 300 times for Rangers should be treated as a fantastic servant to the club. But there is a time when someone should be moved on and his performances the last two seasons have been questionable. My worry now is replacing someone of his quality and ability to play 60 games a season! Celtic are stepping up their pursuit of Rangers-linked 28-year-old Heart of Midlothian striker Lawrence Shankland as an agreement with Norwich City over a return to Glasgow for Adam Idah continues to prove elusive. (HITC), external Rangers and Manchester United are in talks over a deal for midfielder Hannibal Mejbri, but while the English club want to sell the 21-year-old immediately, the Scottish Premiership outfit are seeking a loan deal with the possibility of buying him at the end of that. This video can not be played Relive a classic meeting between Hearts and Rangers from 2015, before the sides meet on the opening weekend of the Scottish Premiership season. Goalkeeper Jack Butland says Rangers are a club that "needs to embrace being written off". The Ibrox side head into the new Premiership season away to Hearts on Saturday amid a tumultuous summer. Several long-serving players, such as Connor Goldson, Borna Barisic and Ryan Jack, have departed while eight new recruits have arrived. Fans have become disgruntled at the club's transfer activity, as well as underwhelming pre-season displays and the temporary relocation to Hampden. But Butland says the squad must put that noise behind them as they aim to deny title favourites Celtic a fourth straight top-flight crown. "Words are words, we've got to go and show it now, " the Rangers keeper told Sky Sports, external. "You can paint any picture you like, pre-season is about getting people through it and getting fitness levels up, integrating the new boys. "Yes, there have been changes, but that's football. It happens at every club, every summer. "People always write us off. This club needs to embrace being written off, it has done. It comes down to what's in the changing room and in this group. "The following we get from the fans is always going to be there and it's going to take a collective effort from everybody. " Jamie Currie Fan writer This pre-season was supposed to be about a great rebuild. The manager was pretty clear on that when he spoke after the Scottish Cup final, but it is not as far along as hoped at this point. On the signings, Connor Barron looks the pick and Vaclav Cerny appears to the guy who will hopefully solve the right-wing issue, but there is lots of work to do. With Connor Goldson now away, I feel we still need to add two first-choice central defenders, a proper defensive midfielder - who can sit and dictate - and a striker. Hopefully we also get the return of Abdallah Sima from Brighton - but as it stands just now, the squad is a mess. I don't point the finger of blame to the manager and director of football Nils Koppen; this is summer upon summer of poor recruitment in and out coming back to bite us. In truth, the pre-season games have been a shambles and we do not look ready for Hearts on Saturday, never mind our foray into the Champions League qualifiers. If you add all of this into the Ibrox refurb shambles and having to play our home matches at Hampden, I would say it has not been a great summer so far. At the minute there is not much to be positive about regarding Rangers, sadly. Predicted finish: Second Standout player: Mohammed Diomande Game most looking forward to: First game back at Ibrox Connor Goldson has said his Rangers memories will "never be beaten" after the centre-back left the Glasgow club to join Aris Limassol for an undisclosed fee. The 31-year-old defender joined the Ibrox side from Brighton in 2018 under Steven Gerrard and went on to play over 300 games for the club. "The time has come, it's my time to get off the train and the ride that we have been on together for the past six years, " Goldson posted on Instagram, external. "What a six years it has been and what a pleasure it was to be a pleasure it was to be a part of this amazing football club. We went through many highs and lows together but throughout the journey I can promise you that I gave this club everything I had. "I tried to lead by example every single day I walked into that building and strived to make the football club a better place than when I signed, it wasn't perfect and neither was I but I can honestly sit here and look myself in the mirror and say I gave it my all and nobody cared more. " Goldson was an integral part of Rangers' 2020-21 Scottish Premiership title win, during which they did not lose a game and conceded only 10 goals over 38 matches. He also played a key role in the side's journey to 2021-22 Europa League final before winning a Scottish Cup and League Cup. "The league title, both cups. Do I sit here and wish we had won more together, of course. But I also sit here grateful for the memories we shared together and it's something that I don't think will be able to be beaten. "Rangers will always have a place in my heart. I will always follow. And I will always cheer, because when you been a part of this special club I don't think it ever leaves you. Thank you and best of luck for the future, Connor Goldson. " The Englishman has signed a three-year contract with Cypriot side Aris. Just over six years since arriving in Glasgow, Connor Goldson departs Rangers with three trophies and a memorable run to a European final to his name. The English centre-back joined the Ibrox club from Brighton in June 2018 and quickly became a leader within the squad, captaining Rangers for the first time during the second league game of the 2018-19 campaign - in which he also netted his first Rangers goal in a 2-0 victory over St Mirren. In his third season with the club Rangers secured their 55th league title - conceding just 10 goals and finishing the league campaign unbeaten. Goldson featured in all 56 games Rangers played that season and was subsequently named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year. The 31-year-old went on to win both the Scottish Cup and League Cup with the Ibrox club - playing every minute of both finals - while also reaching the 2021-22 Europa League final. As Rangers prepare for their Premiership opener with Hearts on Saturday, manager Philippe Clement has been speaking to Sky Sports, external. Here's the best of what the Belgian had to say: On Rangers' summer. .. "We knew we needed a rebuild, a rebuild is not a renovation. "As manager you'd like to do a renovation, change one, two or three players and keep the core of your team, but that was not the case. "We had an older squad, six players leaving for free, they were at the end of their contracts, that changed a lot. " Is it a bigger rebuild than you expected? "It's a busy period that started later than normal because of the Euros. "The club has already done a lot of things using the budget we have, but we don't have a budget to spend money just because we have the money, so we have to do it wisely. " How have things changed? "You step into a club and you don't know the club well, the squad well, every detail of every contract. "For me it was a big surprise six players were out of contract. We had some we wanted to keep, but they took another way because they could earn much more money. "Those things you can't take into account in October [when I was appointed]. " On Todd Cantwell's transfer request. .. "I kept the door open all the time these past weeks. It's already a while ago since he came to me for the first time with [the transfer request]. "As long as a player is here and we believe in his qualities, the door is always open [for him to stay]. " Are you where you want to be? "We made really good steps this pre-season in ways people don't see because they don't know the past or the details. "We're still very busy in the transfer market. I'm very convinced Vaclav Cerny will be a really, really important signing and I'm convinced we can make a good start to the season. " On potential interest in Lawrence Shankland. .. "That's a name that comes a lot, but there also other names. It stays the same, I will never speak about rumours and for sure not players we play against. Would you back Rangers to win the league? "I'll put all my effort into that. That's what we need to do. We know [Celtic's summer] is a small renovation with a few details and they can build on their core. "We have a big rebuild. Let us first make a good foundation and build our house over the next couple of weeks and months to make it much stronger. " Amid fan discontent and a pre-season of upheaval, are Rangers in danger of watching history repeat itself? The Athletic's Jordan Campbell feels that's very much the case as Philippe Clement prepares to lead his side into the new campaign in the midst of a tumultuous summer. Unconvincing displays in recent friendlies, coupled with their transfer dealings so far, have prompted concern in a rising number of disgruntled supporters. Following a disappointing end to last term, Campbell says the club are heading into the new season with "a lot of uncertainty" surrounding them. Rangers will play their home game at Hampden up to early September due to delayed work ongoing at Ibrox, while speculation continues to link captain James Tavernier and fellow experienced defender Connor Goldson with moves away. Speaking on the BBC's Scottish Football Podcast, Campbell feels the mood of the fans risks "going from discontent to apathy" if certain issues are not addressed in the coming month. "Three years in a row Celtic have won the league, " he adds. "If you asked Rangers fans in the summer they won their first title in a decade if they thought that would happen, they'd never have believed it. "It's down to mismanagement at the club, not selling their best assets at the right time, not making the money. They’ve allowed Celtic to become the dominate team again. "It's like Rangers are caught on their heels again with a season starting. It feels like a fire sale is upon us, then that doesn’t leave you a lot of time to rebuild a squad. There's a lot of pressure to get that right over the next few weeks. "Every transition [season] seems to lead to a botched plan in November/December. A new guy gets to the end of the season, they tail off because the players aren't enough, then the summer comes and they bring in eight or nine players. "They are very much in danger of repeating history here. Rangers really do need three or four indisputable starters to shift the needle. " Joan Jordan's departure from Sevilla to Rangers is about to be unblocked after a loan purchase with an option to buy of £4. 2m was agreed for the midfielder. Although Rangers have added six new players to the squad over the summer, there are still persistent links to Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland. “I don’t go into rumours and I will not speak about players of teams we are going to play against, " Clement told press after the game in Berlin. Asked if there were any other signings incoming, he replied: "That is a good question as a journalist but you know I can't answer that because as long as there is no pen on paper, there is nothing in this world. It can be five minutes, five weeks… I don’t know, but there will be other signings. " The high-scoring draw means Rangers have conceded 10 goals in three pre-season games, although the manager was relaxed about that particular stat. "Am I concerned about losing so many goals? No, of course I want fewer goals against but for example, against Man United we had three shots on goal and they made two goals, " Clement said. "It is not like Jack Butland played a bad game. You need to look a little through the stats also because against Man United we played a good defensive game and today in a lot of moments we played a good defensive game. “But we made a few mistakes that in the future will not happen anymore because we learn out of that. That is the story with new players and a new squad, you need to build out of something so mistakes come along the way and you need to learn and work on it. That is in every team in the world. "Defensively, [there are] things to work on. We [conceded] two similar goals and spoke about that at half-time. That is normal with new players, they need to learn things and it’s by mistakes, that is part of the journey. Tom Lawrence scored twice against last season's Bundesliga strugglers Rangers manager Philippe Clement was delighted with Tom Lawrence's two-goal display in a 4-4 pre-season draw with Union Berlin after highlighting the attacking midfielder's position as a potential problem. Clement admitted in midweek that Rangers would need to find someone to fill the number 10 role after Todd Cantwell asked for a transfer. The Belgian also highlighted the loss of on-loan Brighton & Hove Albion forward Abdallah Sima. "It's important to have offensive players who have stats, " he told Rangers TV. "With Sima, we lost somebody who had a lot of stats last season, so we need to have other players who make up for that. "And it's important in the number 10 role that you have someone who is in the right positions and makes the right runs and then, with the way we play football, you will always get chances to score. "Tom did that role brilliantly. I am really pleased about the way he played, not only with the ball but without the ball. " Lawrence is looking to kick-start his Rangers career after spending a year on the sidelines before making 16 starts last season. "It's good to get a pre-season under my belt, " the Wales international said. "I feel fit and ready to go, so that's the main thing. "It's always good to score goals, especially in my position. I need to create goals and score goals and if I don't then it's on me. So that's what I need to do this season. " Cyriel Dessers and Tom Lawrence both found the net twice Cyriel Dessers and Tom Lawrence both scored twice as Rangers ended their pre-season preparations with a 4-4 draw away to Union Berlin. Midfielder Janik Haberer gave the hosts a fifth-minute lead at Stadion An der Alten Försterei, but striker Dessers round the home goalkeeper to slot home an equaliser eight minutes later. Striker Jordan Siebatcheu restored the lead after 21 minutes from the penalty spot, only for midfielder Lawrence to fire in from just inside the penalty box twice within five minutes just after the half-hour mark. Haberer's close-range finish levelled the scores again at the break for the side who just escaped relegation after finishing 15th in the Bundesliga last season and winger David Preu found the bottom corner just short of the hour. Dessers, though, had the final say as he evaded a challenge on the edge of the six-yard box before prodding through the goalkeeper's leg with 22 minutes remaining.
