Manchester United picked up a valuable draw against Real Sociedad on Thursday night in the Europa League. The Red Devils will head back to Old Trafford with their last 16 tie still up for grabs after Joshua Zirkzee's goal was cancelled out. Zirkzee gave United the lead in the second half, but a penalty conceded by Bruno Fernandes let the hosts back in. Mikel Oyarzabal netted from the spot and that goal has set up a tense affair in the second leg next week. You can recap all of the action in our live blog below. .. Man United boss Ruben Amorim believed his side were hampered by fatigue as they let their lead slip in Spain. He's now expecting pressure to be on United in front of their home support in the crucial second leg next week. "I felt that until the penalty we had control of the game, " Amorim said. "The penalty changed the momentum a bit. "I felt that our team in the last 30 minutes were really, really tired. You can feel it in the game. "So we take this stage to Old Trafford, it's going to be a different game and the pressure is going to be on us. "We have to be ready. The key will be to survive physically on Sunday and then to be ready and fresh for Thursday. " He continued: "The momentum changed, but I think it was clearly fatigue. We were late on the balls, even in transition. "The pace was different and Sociedad were stronger. " By holding on late against Real Sociedad, Manchester United have continued their impressive unbeaten streak, Ruben Amorim's side are the only team who haven't lost a single game in the Europa League and Champions League. That's pretty impressive. It's been a rough season for the Red Devils and Amorim, but if they can keep this run up, silverware would be theirs. Of course, there's a long way to go though. .. Man United goalscorer Joshua Zirkzee believes that his side deserved more from the game after being held to a draw. "There was more there for us tonight, " he told TNT Sports. "I think we were unlucky with the penalty, I'm not sure what happened there, but it shows we have to be relentless. "I think we had enough for them today and in the end, a draw, away, they now have to come to Old Trafford. " Zirkzee added: "I think if you look at the chances and the opportunities we had, I think yes [we should have won]. "We're obviously playing against a good footballing team, so of course it's not easy, but in the end I think we should have had one more. " Here's the results from elsewhere in the Europa League. Tottenham have been beaten 1-0 by AZ Alkmaar while Rangers have impressively won away at Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce. Lyon have also won, meaning this tie was the only one in the early kick-offs to not to have a winner in the first leg. Well, it will still be all to play for in next week's second leg. Man United are going to leave Spain thinking they could have won the game against a largely toothless Real Sociedad. But the hosts will also think they could have won the game after Orri Stein Oskarsson missed from very close range. So that sets up an interesting tie at Old Trafford, with the entire season resting on win for United. .. There we go, it's all over in Spain! Man United hold on and claim a draw against Real Sociedad, with the last 16 tie wide open heading back to Old Trafford. Joshua Zirkzee scored the opener for Ruben Amorim's side but his strike was cancelled out by a penalty. Bruno Fernandes was judged to have handballed in the box and Mikel Oyarzabal stepped up to score. The tie is now all set up for a tense affair next week! 90+4' WHAT A SAVE, ANDRE ONANA! The Man United goalkeeper denies Orri Stein Oskarsson as he fires a powerful strike across goal! Oskarsson's effort is good, but Onana doesn't really well to dive to his right and parry wide. Real Sociedad come so close to a winner at the death! 90+2' Man United do well to cut out a counter. Sheraldo Becker is sent down the right and he charges through before Patrick Dorgu gets back to cover. Becker is forced to cut back and poke a ball into the box but Victor Lindelof is there to hoof clear. United are holding on in the final moments. .. 90' We're into five minutes of added time. Can Man United hold on here? Or will Real Sociedad claim a very late winner? These next few moments could change this last-16 tie. .. 87' Man United made two substitutions. Toby Collyer and Victor Lindelof come on to replace Leny Yoro and goalscorer Joshua Zirkzee. Ruben Amorim's side are coming under lots of pressure in the final stages, and it seems they're going to sit in deep. Jon Ander Olasagasti replaces Luka Sucic for the hosts. 84' HOW ARE REAL SOCIEDAD NOT IN FRONT? ! Somehow, Orri Stein Oskarsson has missed the target from four yards out after a great cross from Sheraldo Becker! Oskarsson beats Leny Yoro to the ball at the back post and sliding in, with the goal right in front of him. But he gets his shot all wrong, toe-poking it wide. Man United are very lucky that they're not losing here. Darren Bent live on talk SPORT: "He goes for the wrong technique, it's a really, really poor finish. " 81' Real Sociedad then respond with sub too. Takefusa Kubo is withdrawn for Sheraldo Becker. The No. 11 will look to cause some problems on the right wing. Man United are sitting a bit deeper and hoping for a counter-attack to try and grab a late winner. 79' Man United have made a change. Christian Eriksen takes Alejandro Garnacho's place. Ruben Amorim brings an extra body into midfield, which should allow Bruno Fernandes to move further forward. Matthijs de Ligt is hobbling but is going to continue. 76' Real Sociedad are controlling the ball. They're probing for a second goal and you'd think they need it, with a trip to Old Trafford coming up next. Man United haven't had a sniff since conceding and this is the most defending they've had to do all night. Andre Onana has just been forced to push wide from Brais Mendez's curling long-range effort. 73' The momentum is switching now. The home fans are in fine voice and creating a great atmosphere, and it's pushing their side forward. Man United need to deal with this pressure. They were cruising before that penalty. 70' MIKEL OYARZABAL SCORES FROM THE SPOT! That's Real Sociedad's first shot on target in the game. Man United have been pegged back from nothing. The entire stadium is now doing the Poznan, bouncing around. Darren Bent live on talk SPORT: "It's a harsh decision but the right one. " 68' YES WE WILL! IT'S A PENALTY TO REAL SOCIEDAD! They have a golden chance to level it after Bruno Fernandes is judged to have handballed it in the box. The ball is headed into Fernandes' left hand and he blocks it, with the referee awarding the spot-kick. It's harsh on Man United, with the header hitting the arm from a very close range and that is what their captain is angry about. 67' We have a VAR check for a penalty. .. Out of nothing, the referee stops play. It seems Bruno Fernandes has handballed it in the box from a cross and that looks very harsh. Will we see a spot-kick given? 64' Real Sociedad have made three changes. Benat Turrientes, Aritz Elustondo and Ander Barrenetxea have all been withdrawn with 25 minutes to go. Orri Stein Oskarsson, Pablo Marin and Jon Aramburu come on. The hosts need a spark here, they've lacked threat all night. 61' How big could that goal be for Man United? That was just the second goal that Joshua Zirkzee has scored for United away from home - with his first coming in December. He's stepped up in a crucial clash. It will make up for his penalty miss in the shootout against Fulham in the FA Cup at the weekend. 58' MAN UNITED'S PRESSURE PAYS OFF! JOSHUA ZIRKZEE OPENS THE SCORING! The Dutchman fires in a low strike from the edge of the box after a low cross from Alejandro Garnacho. That's his first Man United goal in Europe! Darren Bent live on talk SPORT: "He's deserved it, his plays been good, it's been crisp. "When his opportunity came, he doesn't try to smash it, he hits the target and it finds its way into the back of the net. " 56' Alejandro Garnacho has another chance. This time, his effort is too weak to beat Alex Remiro and he collects the ball easily before hoofing clear. Bruno Fernandes laid off Garnacho after a great run into he box and he's been pulling the strings in this half. Although he has just been booked for dissent. Man United have been the better team in this tie since the break but they just need to find that goal. 53' Man United come so close to an opener! Joshua Zirkzee flicks the ball out to Patrick Dorgu who fires in a low cross through some bodies in the six-yard box. .. It somehow avoids everyone and falls to Alejandro Garnacho before the Argentinian misses the target at the back post. That was a tight angle, but instead of playing the ball back into Rasmus Hojlund, he could only hit the side-netting. Darren Bent live on talk SPORT: "Garnacho, decision-making again. "If he just cuts that back, Hojlund taps it in. He needed to get his head up and not go for the glory. " 51' The first booking of the game comes out. Igor Zubeldia cynically pulls Rasmus Hojlund's shirt. Bruno Fernandes asks for a red card as Hojlund was about to break free on goal, but it's just a yellow. And rightly so, as three Real Sociedad defenders were going to be there in time to potentially cut the run off. From the free-kick, Fernandes' shot goes wide. 48' That's more like it from the hosts. Takefusa Kubo skips down the right-hand side before he drills a very dangerous cross into the box. Mikel Oyarzabal is there and looks like he can just finish from close range but Leny Yoro gets across to clear well. The referee doesn't spot that though, and awards a goal-kick. © 2025 talk SPORT Limited
