Shough’s playing time against the Bucs was his first extensive action of the season and came after the Saints benched Rattler late in the third quarter while trailing the Buccaneers 17-3. Shough completed 17 of 30 passes for 128 yards and an interception in a 23-3 loss. Advertisement Rattler, who was drafted by the Saints in the fifth round in 2024, has started each game for New Orleans this season, completing 68 percent of his passes while tossing eight touchdowns to five interceptions. Rattler went 0-6 as a starter last year and has a 1-13 record in the role for the Saints. New Orleans hopes that Shough can become the quarterback the Saints have been searching for since Drew Brees retired following the 2020 season. Shough will be the ninth different starter for the Saints since the start of the 2021 season. New Orleans appeared to have their guy under center when Derek Carr signed a four-year deal with the Saints in 2023 to reunite with then-head coach Dennis Allen. However, Allen was fired midway through the 2024 season and injuries forced Carr to retire following the 2024 season. Rattler was a carryover from the previous regime but his presence allowed the Saints to give Shough time to learn from the sidelines, rather than being thrown into the fire in Week 1 as a rookie. But given Shough’s draft slot — No. 40 in the 2025 draft — and that he was selected by new head coach Kellen Moore, it felt like only a matter of time before Shough would be named the starter, and Rattler’s performance hasn’t been strong enough to prevent that decision. Shough was No. 50 on Dane Brugler’s final draft rankings. He was the fourth-rated quarterback in the draft, behind Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders and Jaxson Dart. “Shough is overaged and needs to cut back on some of the high-risk passing decisions, but he is a gifted thrower with the functional mobility to work off schedule, ” Brugler wrote about the Louisville product before the draft. “He has the tools to work his way up a depth chart and make plays once on the field. ” Shough was the third quarterback taken in the draft, behind Ward and Dart. Shough will be on the road against a Rams defense that currently ranks No. 1 in the league in defensive EPA, according to Tru Media. The Rams rank in the top 10 in the NFL this season in points allowed per game, turnovers forced and third-down defense. After Sunday’s game in Los Angeles, the Saints will go on the road against the Carolina Panthers before they get their bye week. The team’s next home game will be against the Atlanta Falcons on Nov. 23, after the bye. Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms Play today's puzzle
