Ivan Azon scored Ipswich's opening goal Ipswich Town left it late to beat relegated Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough and move closer to the automatic promotion places. Ivan Azon scored 12 minutes from time, before top scorer Jack Clarke wrapped up victory from the penalty spot with his 13th goal of the season three minutes later. The win extended Ipswich's unbeaten run to six games and moved the Tractor Boys up a place to third, within two points of Middlesbrough in second - and Kieran Mc Kenna's side have a game in hand. Wednesday pushed them hard and threatened to record their first home point of 2026, before their resolve was broken. Ipswich dominated possession and chances, and Pierce Charles saved shots from the bright Clarke and Anis Mehmeti. The Northern Ireland goalkeeper also kept out an effort from outside the box from Dan Neil. Wednesday are slowly improving under head coach Henrik Pedersen, and Sean Fusire saw a shot saved by keeper Christian Walton. Wednesday's on-loan Luton striker Jerry Yates had a couple of shots blocked, while Gabriel Otegbago hit an effort wide. Azon replaced George Hirst on 66 minutes and the Spaniard should have scored when he flicked his shot wide when through one-on-one with Charles. He made amends three minutes later, in the 78th minute, when he finished smartly into the bottom corner from Ben Johnson's cross. Wednesday were beaten, despite all their efforts, and Clarke made sure of the points nine minutes from time when Fusire fouled him in the box and he dispatched the spot-kick. It was a satisfying end to a difficult week for Ipswich, after conceding a controversial 96th-minute penalty in their midweek draw at Stoke, and Leif Davis' three-match ban for clashing with Leicester's Caleb Okoli. Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen told BBC Radio Sheffield: "It was a tough, tough game against a very, very strong opponent. They are a strong, strong team with a fantastic manager. With this cocktail, we all knew it would be a big challenge today. "But I think from the first moment, we showed that the boys really tried. We also saw in the first 10 minutes that there was some tiredness in their bodies and then we worked into the game. I think we played a really, really strong first half. "Then second half, we really had some challenges to make the correction for their tactical changes. We did this and we had a really good period again. "Then we had a difficult period up to the goal where we won the ball, we lost the ball and then you could feel it was difficult for us to come back. "We really emphasize trying to start fast and come out and get it, but we didn't manage to do that. We didn't take the couple of early chances we had, and then as the game wears on, you can get a little bit tense. "Then it's about just staying disciplined and trying not to give anything away. It took to the later stages, we knew that might be the way and it was today. "The bonus was we got a clean sheet, we didn't give much away, and we gave ourselves a chance to show our quality with the goals at the end.
