UEFA Champions League All competitions All competitions All competitions Sporting CP and Lille have met just twice previously in European competition, with the Portuguese side winning home (1-0) and away (2-1) in the 2010-11 UEFA Europa League group stage. Lille won their first ever away trip to face a Portuguese side in Europe (2-0 v União de Leiria in the UEFA Intertoto Cup in August 2004), but have since lost on each of their last three such trips, and all without scoring a goal. Sporting CP have only won one of their six games against French sides in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League (D1 L4), losing each of the last three in a row. Their last meeting with French opponents in the competition came in the 2022-23 group stage, losing home (0-2) and away (1-4) to Marseille. Lille have never won their opening game of a UEFA Champions League campaign, drawing three and losing four of their seven such matches. When starting with an away game, they’ve lost three of their four (D1) and failed to score in each defeat. Sporting CP have won their opening game in two of their previous three UEFA Champions League campaigns (L1), beating Olympiakos 3-2 in 2017-18 and Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 in 2022-23. Prior to this, they had only won their opening game in two of their first seven appearances in the competition (D2 L3). Lille coach Bruno Génésio has only lost one of his last 11 games as a manager in the UEFA Champions League (all with Lyon between 2016 and 2019), although eight of those matches have ended level (W2). Rúben Amorim has won 36% of his games in charge of Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League (5/14); the highest win percentage of any manager for the club in the competition (min. two games). Viktor Gyökeres has been directly involved in seven goals in nine appearances for Sporting CP in European competition (five goals and two assists), with all of those coming in the UEFA Europa League last season. Gyökeres has also netted in all three of the home games he’s started for the club in Europe (three goals). Jonathan David is Lille’s joint-top scorer in the UEFA Champions League (3), while only two players have netted more goals for the club across European competition overall: Yusuf Yazici (12) and Pierre-Alain Frau (7). Pedro Gonçalves has been directly involved in six goals in 10 UEFA Champions League appearances for Sporting CP (four goals and two assists). If he scores or assists in this game, he will have the joint-most goal involvements for the club in the competition (7 – Paulinho, Nani and Liedson). © 2024 BBC.
