Martin Keown has warned Newcastle that they should stop their pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. The Magpies have had a club-record bid of £65million turned down by the Eagles - their fourth rejected offer for the England centre-back. talk SPORT understands that Palace are still seeking more money. That is despite Newcastle thought to have matched the south London outfit's valuation of Guehi. And this could see the Toon to explore alternative options - which includes Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah - with boss Eddie Howe determined to sign a new central defender. Guehi made 29 appearances for Palace last season, bringing his club statistics to five goals in 111 appearances. He helped Palace finishing tenth in the league, as they enjoyed a remarkable end to their campaign which saw them unbeaten in their last seven games. The 24-year-old then proved himself to be something of a sensation over the summer after he stepped up to assume a key role in England's Euro 2024 squad. He played every minute of the group stages, partnering John Stones in defence and was praised as one of England's most consistent performers throughout the tournament. But Arsenal Invincible and talk SPORT pundit Keown believes Newcastle are not necessarily making a shrewd move by going after Guehi with such persistence. Speaking to Jim White and Simon Jordan, he explained why he had reservations about the club's dogged approach so far. "I do think he's a very good player, " he explained. "(But) I think there are limits. And I'm just wondering, this bravado - you know, there's going to have to be a limit to what they can pay. "I think they should step away at this point. " But Jordan was quick to respond, asking why the scale of this potential transfer in particular concerned Keown, compared to some others in the past. "So when Arsenal sign a 19-year-old in Saliba for £27m to play 16 appearances (it's OK), " he reminded. "Whereas you've got Guehi, who was a revelation in the European Cup, he's been a mainstay at Crystal Palace and a side that often finds itself under pressure. Why are you resistant to the market forces? " "Well, because I'm not particularly certain that that's the right area for Newcastle to strengthen in, " replied Keown. "I think they've got an abundance of defenders there. I mean, they took Lloyd Kelly in there from Bournemouth, who might just be a little diamond that they could unearth. "I wonder if that's why Eddie was bringing him in. Maybe he's seen now he's not quite in pre-season what he thought. So he wants Guehi to come in instead. And it's an ageing defence, maybe. And he wants to make some changes. "But I would have thought, you know, there was talk of [Alexander] Isak having to leave the football club to fulfil the Financial Fair Play details. "And now they're paying £65m for a defender. So that feels really odd. " However, speaking ahead of Newcastle's opening league clash against newly-promoted Southampton on Saturday - live on talk SPORT 2 - Howe insisted that the club would not fork out a disproportionate sum for Guehi. When questioned over whether the club might have walked away from a situation like this in the past, he said: "We have done many times in my time here, especially early on where there was very much a 'Newcastle tax' on any deal where when we would ring up, the price would double, so many times we were, 'No, that's not for us, we're not going to go down that road where we feel we're over-paying for players. ' "That's changed slightly because people have seen the dynamic, that we're not going to pay silly fees for players, so I think now it's returned more to normality. " When asked if any specific deals were close to completion, he said: "Not that I know of. " He added: "We're hopeful. We're working hard. There's no lack of effort from outside but, as I said earlier, there's nothing close. " Palace face Brentford on Sunday and boss Oliver Glasner revealed that Guehi will be available. “Well yes, Marc trained today with us, we talked together, ” Glasner said during his pre-match press conference. “I have no other information, I will have to look at my bank account to see if something has come in but it doesn’t look like [it] so we plan for the game with Marc. “He’s our player, our captain and I can’t tell you anything else. ” Sign Up Offer: Bet £10 and get a free bet on EVERY Premier League game for the first three weekends of the season - CLAIM HERE T&Cs: 18+ New customers only.
