Tom Rostance Chelsea are ahead of all expectations, it's fair to say. The packed December schedule continues on Monday night when West Ham take on Wolves. Join us for that one! FT: Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea Chelsea Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "The celebration at the end was because I was very happy at the way to come back. Mentally we showed how strong we are. Overall we deserved to win the game. "On the ball I think, even when we conceded the two goals, we were playing very good. The team was playing very good and then second half, up until he last five minutes we conceded nothing at all and created chances. We deserved to win the game. " On Cole Palmer stealing the headlines: "For me, the headline today is for all the team. Especially for the two wingers: Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho. They were fantastic on the ball but also off the ball they sacrificed. Today they were both fantastic. " On teams around them dropping points: "We go game by game and we came here to see how we improve. This is the most important thing. " Have the team made more progress than you maybe thought they would? "For sure, 100 per cent. We are ahead of my expectation, in terms of the way we play on the ball, off the ball and in terms of the results. "We changed again tonight seven players and will make changes on Thursday and Sunday because they are good and all deserve to play. " FT: Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea Jamie Carragher Former Liverpool defender on Sky Sports The manager keeps telling us he won't change. I can't imagine any manager when I played for Liverpool, after conceding four goals, saying that we played well. FT: Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea Tottenham Hotspur Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Their penalties were poor from our behalf. We didn't need to make those challenges and it was hard for us to claw it back. "I think sometimes when you are in this position we are, you are desperate to do the right thing. You probably need a calmer approach. The guys are desperate to do the right thing and unfortunately it cost us. " On the approach throughout the game: "It was good enough to get us ahead in the game so I am not sure why we should change our approach. It was a game of big moments. If we score at 2-2 and go 3-2 ahead then the pressure is on them and they have to open up like we did when we conceded. But like I said, disappointing that we let them get the advantage in a way that was self-inflicted. " On Cristian Romero's injury: "He had a knock on his toe and today was his quad so it's quite different. With Romero going down, who we thought would play 90 comfortably, made it a bit more challenging. Hopefully Micky will be OK. " On improving in the coming weeks: "You have no alternative and have to keep going. There is no other path we can take and we just have to keep showing up. The bit that was disappointing was that we showed the kind of team we can be, because they are a top side and we had the better of them but then unfortunately we are dealing with major disruptions. We have to keep persevering. "We have got to see what the health of the squad is. We are a bit thin and have some long term ones. Between now and January there are some big games. " FT: Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea Chelsea Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "The first 10 or 15 minutes we conceded two easy goals but overall we were in control of the game. "The reaction of the players was mentally strong both on and off the ball. " How does Marc Cucurella slip and having a problem with his boots? : "That's a question for him. I don't know. "It can happen. Unfortunately, it happened twice to the same player, but it can happen. " On coming from behind: "We had some problems because of the goals we conceded. The other problems in the first half were due to the build-up. We didn't concede many chances in the second half. " On the high level of performance: "We used to change players game by game but today the players were all very good. Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho were great on and off the ball. " FT: Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea Paul Merson Former Arsenal midfielder speaking on Sky Sports I don't mean to sound disrespectful but I'm watching the game, Spurs are 2-0 up against Chelsea and it's like they are playing against Kilmarnock or St Mirren and he's the Celtic manager and got the best players. They haven't got the best players at Tottenham, so they have to change it. You can't go, you have a shot, we have a shot and we can destroy you like they have over the years. You've got to be cute and say, 'we're 2-0 up here, let's counterattack. ' FT: Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea Chelsea Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, speaking to Sky Sports: "For the fans and for us, I said in the week that we were working to make the fans happy, and today they can be happy. " On Marc Cucurella slipping twice and changing boots: "He said to me after the game that he was trying to bring emotion to the game. "No, being serious, to come this stadium against this team and be 2-0 down, but continue then with the same plan on and off the ball and then second half we changed things tactically. I think overall we deserved to win. "It's more a question for Marc. They are mature enough to decide what boots they need for the game. The most important thing is that we were 2-0 but we continued the same way to create chances. " On making changes at half time: "First of all we had a problem with Romeo Lavia. That meant Malo Gusto came on and we moved Moi [Caicedo] and changed the attacking midfielder. "The changes were good. " On Lavia's problem: "He had a hamstring problem but now he is OK. We don't want to take risks in December. Sometimes it's better to make changes after 45 minutes rather than lose a player for five or six games. " On Cole Palmer: "I know Cole from a long time ago and I always trust him in every aspect. He is a fantastic guy. He is learning how to play games when he is marked man-to-man, [Yves] Bissouma was with him all the game. "He is learning, improving and scoring goals. That makes him happy and makes us happy. " On maintaining a high level of performance: "The plan or the idea is to not let the players slow down. They can not drop because they know another player is waiting to come in. " On keeping pace with title rivals: "Arsenal, City and Liverpool probably don't slide - like Cucurella did. To be serious, we are not ready, we are far from these teams but we focus on day-by-day and trying to improve the team. " FT: Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea Chelsea Chelsea winger Jadon Sancho speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Going 2-0 down in the first half was not ideal but I knew we'd come back into the game when we got that first goal. "Going in at halftime, the gaffer was telling us we were in the game. I have so much belief in the players so I knew we'd come out firing. "They're very aggressive and we knew we'd catch them if we broke the lines and beat the press. The gaffer told us to stay wide and create the one-on-ones. "I've been working on my shooting a bit more. The staff and the players have been telling me otherwise. " On Cucurella's boots: "They're going in the bin after this game. After the mistakes, I thought he played fantastic. We believe in Cucu. "We've got back-to-back games every week, we need this rotation in the squad. There's one team and then another team. It gets rotated and it works. We've got so many talented players and we push each other. I'm thankful I'm here. " This was the 11th time that Tottenham lost a Premier League game after having been 2+ goals ahead – at least four more such defeats than any other side in the competition’s history. It was also the first time they did so at home in the league since September 2001 against Manchester United (3-5). #bbcfootball, text 81111 (UK only - standard rates apply) or Whats App 03301231826 To play the way Ange wants to and win, you need world class players week in week out. We haven't got that. Levy pressing the eject button will make no difference. James FT: Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea Jamie Redknapp Former Tottenham midfielder on Sky Sports Enzo Maresca deserves credit for what he did. He wanted to put Caicedo in the middle and Gusto as a conventional right-back in there. Caicedo started to run the game in the middle and Chelsea took control. FT Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea Paul Merson Former Arsenal midfielder speaking on Sky Sports First of all coming from Manchester to London is a big move in itself. Cole Palmer has come into the team and he's been outstanding. When you first come into the team and you're from Man City, a young kid and nobody really knows about him and he didn't play loads, so you get a bit of a free hit. The last six or seven months he's the big boy. The name of the game is stop Cole Palmer and then you might be able to stop Chelsea. You can't do it and that shows how good he is. FT: Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea Tottenham Hotspur Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It is a sore one, a painful one. "We started the game really well but as our season has been going, we lose [Cristian] Romero after 20 minutes and that disrupts us a bit and they score straight after. "We had moments to get our third and at half-time we were in a decent position. The second half is a ding dong, especially at the start, they scored but we had a big chance with Son, we didn't take it and then they go 3-2 up. "I thought both penalties were poor decisions by us, we have to show more discipline. In the end the critical moments got us. "I think there were quality opportunities but I don't think there was an abundance of them. I can't remember the keepers making a load of top quality saves. "We more than matched a good side in that department and when there is quality out there you are going to have moments. "There were things we could have done better for sure. " On whether Moises Caicedo should have been sent off: "That's what is happening in the game now, referees are leaving it to other powers that be to make decisions. "There were a couple that didn't go our way but there's nothing we can do about that. It's out of our control. " On picking up three further injuries: "Obviously Romero was really disappointing. He felt something in his quad after 20 minutes and couldn't continue. "Brennan [Johnson] wasn't well and he tried to sort himself out at half time but he just wasn't up to going out there. "Micky [van de Ven] was just a bit of tiredness. The plan today was always to try and give him 60 or 70 minutes. " FT Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea Jamie Carragher Former Liverpool defender on Sky Sports It is real because it is. But I look at the goalkeeper and the centre-backs and I am not sure. You look at City winning it with Ederson and Dias and then Liverpool with van Dijk and Alisson. Going further back with Cech and Terry. I think you need those big figures in goal and in defence to be title winners. FT: Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea Tottenham Hotspur Tottenham captain Son Heung-min to Sky Sports: "It's very disappointing. I don't know what to say at the moment. We did such a good game in the first half an hour. We conceded very sloppy goals. It feels like we lost because of these small details. On such a big stage, you need to step up and score in these moments. I feel like I let the team down and I feel very sorry for the team. "We can't concede goals like this. We can't dive into this situation. I can stay here all day talking about the mistakes but I'd rather blame me with the chance and I'd rather take the blame. I had a bit of a different thinking when I was running to the ball. I'm also human and I miss. I feel the pain because it's such an important moment of the game. The team tried. "We got to stick together in such difficult moments, it's very important and it's why we need big support. The players are very young and they need support more than before and more than we had. The fans were always supporting amazingly but I think it's time the players also need to step up. We need some big support and big cheering up. " FT Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea Jamie Redknapp Former Tottenham midfielder on Sky Sports Palmer's move to Chelsea has been lifechanging for him. You have to give him a platform. The things he does on the ball are frightening. He is a throwback of a player like he is playing with his mates. It is effortless for him. FT Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea Jamie Carragher Former Liverpool defender on Sky Sports He gets the penalties and he is involved in the Enzo Fernandez goal as well. People fear when he has the ball. He hasn't been playing for the best team. When you look at Chelsea over the years, you look at flair players you look at Gianfranco Zola and Eden Hazard. He has probably done more than Zola already in his 18 months at the club. He is going to go down as one of the biggest players for Chelsea if he keeps doing what he is doing. He is a very special player, and that's not just in the Premier League it is in Europe and world football as well. FT: Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea Cole Palmer reached 50 goal involvements (33 goals, 17 assists) in 48 Premier League games for Chelsea; only Erling Haaland for Man City (39), Andy Cole for Newcastle (43), and Mo Salah for Liverpool (46) have ever reached that total in fewer appearances for a club in the competition. FT: Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea Chris Sutton Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live Ange Postecoglou has spent 25 years in coaching and this style has worked for him. If he has a weakness, it is his stubbornness. He got the job because they wanted to watch entertaining football. But he will not compromise so would you want him to keep that or would you want someone that has a bit more balance? FT: Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea Tottenham Hotspur Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou to Sky Sports: "It's a sore one for sure, it's painful. We started the game really well and then we lose Cristian Romero and we had to reshuffle. We still had some big moments to get a third and finish it off. The second half was a ding-dong for long and then they scored. The two penalties weren't great, we need a bit of discipline in the box. "It's a key point when you lose a key player in the first 20 minutes, He couldn't continue so it's not ideal. "We didn't play well in midweek but we did today. They're a top side, you have got to give credit to them. We got distracted in key moments. We need to realise we are tough to stop when we do play our football. The two penalties were poor. When you're playing these top teams, the momentum shifts quickly. " On Caicedo tackle: "I haven't seen the replays. I thought a couple of decisions were poor. We have to accept it and move on. " On Van de Ven: "He felt a bit tight. He was only meant to play 60 or 70 minutes. Hopefully it's not too bad because you could see the difference. "I'm hoping Romero isn't too bad. We're thin on numbers and if we're thin in January, we'll be looking to add to the squad because they need some help. " Cole Palmer has now scored all 12 of his penalties in the Premier League Cole Palmer's ice-cool 'Panenka' penalty sealed Chelsea's impressive comeback as they came from two goals behind to win at Tottenham. Strikes from Jadon Sancho and Enzo Fernandez and two spot-kicks from Palmer sank Spurs, who made a fast start but then fell apart and suffered a defeat that adds to the recent agony for under-fire manager Ange Postecoglou. Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski had put Tottenham 2-0 up in 11 minutes, but by the time Son Heung-min added their third in stoppage time the game had slipped away from them. Chelsea's win moves them to just four points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, whose game at Everton on Saturday was postponed because of Storm Darragh. Spurs dominated the early proceedings in a breathless start at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and Solanke poked the opener inside five minutes after Brennan Johnson capitalised on a slip from Marc Cucurella. Cucurella slipped again six minutes later to allow Kulusevski to drive at Chelsea's defence and finish inside Robert Sanchez's near post. That was the cue for Cucurella to change his boots, having struggled to stay on his feet at great cost to his team. Momentum gradually began to shift, and Chelsea winger Sancho dribbled past Pedro Porro and Radu Dragusin before curling a terrific low shot in off the right post. The comeback was under way, but Chelsea had an escape when Pape Matar Sarr headed against the bar from a corner. Chelsea's second-half surge came amid a spate of injuries for Tottenham. They lost key defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven - who both returned for this important game but could not last the distance - and winger Johnson. Palmer profited as the Spurs defence hopelessly lost their focus. The England forward converted his first penalty just after the hour as Yves Bissouma brought down Moises Caicedo with a wild lunge, and the second was won by Palmer when Sarr needlessly shoved him over. Palmer's cheeky finish from that second spot-kick rubbed salt into Spurs wounds. Between the two penalties, Fernandez cracked in a thumping third Chelsea goal after Palmer's effort was blocked. It all meant that Son's late goal from a corner routine was trifling consolation. Inevitably, the question will be asked about whether Postecoglou was right to risk Van de Ven and Romero, and with this defeat following on from the midweek loss at Bournemouth there will be growing focus on the Australian boss. Spurs sit 11th, while second-placed Chelsea march on into a title race, Palmer leading the way. On a day when he was pelted with objects thrown at him from the home end, Palmer made sure he and the visitors had the last laugh. What did you make of Tottenham’s display? Have your say on Chelsea's performance This video can not be played Maresca praises 'mentally strong' Chelsea players after comeback at Spurs Palmer's penalty success earned him a Premier League record. He now holds the longest 100% conversion record in the competition after putting away his first 12 spot-kicks. Former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure had a perfect record of 11 out of 11 penalties in the competition, reaching that mark almost 11 years ago to the day, but Palmer has gone one better. It was typical of Palmer that he got there in virtuoso style, dinking the ball down the middle as goalkeeper Fraser Forster expected him to go for a corner. If there was any pressure on the moment, Palmer clearly didn't feel it, living up to his 'Cold Palmer' nickname. Enzo Maresca's Chelsea are comfortably the top scorers in the Premier League with 35 goals from 15 games so far. Palmer, still only 22 years old, has scored 11 of those goals and added six assists. He has 50 goal involvements (33 goals, 17 assists) in 48 Premier League games since joining from Manchester City, fast emerging as the kind of player a title tilt can be built around. This video can not be played 'A sore one, a painful one' - Postecoglou on Chelsea comeback By the end of a thrilling first half, it felt as if Tottenham's anxiety levels were soaring - on the pitch and in the stands. They were still leading, yet home supporters sensed a twist, and losing Romero, Van de Ven and Johnson sent the team into a tailspin. Romero's condition appears to be the biggest concern after suffering what was described as a quad muscle injury, different from his initial toe problem, while Van de Ven's setback was played down and Johnson was said to be ill. Spurs have a strong first-choice XI that can compete with the league's best, but the squad's underbelly is soft and the mistakes that led to Chelsea's penalties added to the day's damage. The camera repeatedly panned to Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy on the TV broadcast. As Spurs slide further away from the European places, Postecoglou's future with this team might have become a matter that Levy chooses to consider, just 18 months after welcoming him with a four-year contract. Chelsea have won 35 Premier League games and scored 116 Premier League goals against Tottenham, more than they have vs any other opponent. It’s also the most goals Spurs have conceded against a side, while they’ve only lost more against Manchester United (39). Five of their six London derby wins under the Australian have been at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, however. Chelsea have won five of their seven games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in all competitions (D1 L1), the most wins any visiting side has picked up at the ground since Spurs moved there in 2019. Among teams he has played 1, 000+ minutes against, Tottenham forward Son Heung-Min’s worst minutes per goal rate in the Premier League is against Chelsea, netting just twice in 16 appearances and 1, 061 minutes of action versus the Blues (531 mins per goal). © 2024 BBC.
