An agreement is not yet in place but the clubs are in talks over a permanent transfer and the situation is advancing. Archer, 22, returned to Villa this summer after Sheffield United’s relegation to the Championship. The striker had joined Sheffield United last summer in a £18. 5million move but Villa were obligated to buy him back after the Bramall Lane side were relegated. GO FURTHER Sandro Tonali is likely to make his Newcastle United return in the Carabao Cup after clarification as to when his suspension expires. The 24-year-old was banned last October for 10 months for betting offences and there had been some confusion as to whether his potential return date was August 27, 28 or 29. But the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC), who issued the ban, has clarified that the midfielder is ineligible up to and including Tuesday, August 27, meaning he is available to play once more from Wednesday, August 28. The newly-promoted Premier League will pay £9million ($11. 6m) plus add-ons for the Republic of Ireland international. Szmodics, 28, enjoyed the most prolific season of his career in 2023-24, scoring 33 goals for Championship side Blackburn across all competitions. The London club hope to sell the 21-year-old for more than the £10million ($12. 8m) they paid to sign him from Molde of Norway in January 2023. Advertisement Getty Images Southampton are in advanced talks with Chelsea to sign Lesley Ugochukwu on a season-long loan. The deal will not include an option for newly-promoted Southampton to buy Ugochukwu — a sale is being ruled out despite multiple enquiries. Chelsea see the 20-year-old midfielder, who joined from Rennes 12 months ago, as a major part of their long-term plans and with similar attributes to Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni. There is a continuing desire to cut costs, bring in revenue and reduce the average of the squad — something Paul Mitchell, the new sporting director, is mindful of. Kieran Trippier‘s future remains uncertain. The 33-year-old is into the final 12 months of his contract and a move to Saudi Arabia has been floated for months but is yet to progress. Mubama is expected to train predominantly with City’s Under-21 side but also with Pep Guardiola’s first team at times. The England Under-20 international progressed through the West Ham academy but departed the club at the end of June following the expiration of his contract. The 21-year-old Italian, who joined Chelsea from Inter Milan in the summer of 2022, finds himself on the periphery of the Chelsea first-team. Casadei, who spent time on loan at Reading, had an underwhelming loan spell at Leicester City last season under Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. He made 25 appearances for Leicester, scoring three goals, and providing two assists before being recalled by Chelsea in January 2024. A market for Casadei beyond the £13million ($16. 6m) paid for him two years ago has been slow to develop. He still has four years left on his Chelsea contract and was not included in Chelsea's squad for their U. S. pre-season tour. The 20-year-old attracted interest from a number of EFL clubs but Liverpool have decided that a spell in the Scottish Premiership represents the best option for his ongoing development. Stephenson, who can play at full-back and in midfield, spent last season on loan at League Two outfit Barrow where he made 34 appearances in all competitions. He joined Liverpool from Sunderland at under-15s level and has captained the club's youth sides. Stephenson is the latest Liverpool youngster to be loaned out this summer following deals for Calvin Ramsay (Wigan Athletic), Luke Chambers (Wigan Athletic), Lewis Koumas (Stoke City) and Fabian Mrozek (IF Brommapojkarna). Olise missed the majority of Bayern's pre-season as he was away with the France national team at the Olympic Games in Paris, where they won a silver medal. The Athletic rates the transfer below GO FURTHER Michael Olise to Bayern Munich: The Athletic 500 transfer ratings Lesley Ugochukwu was expected to depart on loan soon after Chelsea’s return from the States a week ago, but the 20-year-old is still at Cobham. Ugochukwu made just 15 appearances in all competitions last season and The Athletic previously reported that Chelsea would review loan options for the midfielder. The French Football Federation (FFF) said in July that Chelsea had recalled Ugochukwu from his participation with the France Olympic squad. The Frenchman featured in all but one of Chelsea's six pre-season friendlies, scoring in the 2-2 draw with Wrexham on July 25. Getty Images Vitor Roque, 19, is close to leaving Barcelona, despite only joining in January. Last week, there was a meeting at Barcelona’s facilities with the player’s camp, in which Deco told them finding minutes elsewhere is the most reasonable scenario for the teenager. After failing to impress Flick in pre-season, Roque’s camp seems to understand this could be a sensible move. They would prefer a loan to another La Liga side. They will all look for the best options in the coming days. Manchester United/Manchester United via Getty Images Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed new signings Matthijs De Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui will be in the squad to face Fulham in their opening Premier League game tomorrow. The pair’s moves to United from Bayern Munich were confirmed earlier this week, with De Ligt joining for €45million (£38. 5m, $49. 5m) plus €5m in add-ons and Mazraoui signing for €15m plus €5m in add-ons. Ten Hag also confirmed that Harry Maguire will be in the squad after the centre-back lasted 58 minutes of Sunday’s Community Shield defeat by Manchester City before being withdrawn. The Athletic reported in June that the MLS club were in advanced talks over a deal to bring the 35-year-old to the United States after he left Dortmund in May. The German midfielder has now signed a two-and-a-half-year contract through the end of the 2026 MLS season. Martin, 20, has been involved with Madrid's first team during pre-season and was the only academy player to start all three matches during the U. S. tour, impressing the coaching staff with his performances. He has made four senior appearances for Madrid since making his debut against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals in January 2023, but is yet to start a competitive fixture for the first team. A move to Valladolid would see Martin join up with Juanmi Latasa, who joined the club from Madrid this week. Valladolid earned promotion back to La Liga last season with a second place finish in the Segunda Division. Getty Images Milan are close to completing the signing of midfielder Youssouf Fofana from Monaco in a deal worth around €25million (£21. 3m, $27. 4m). The 25-year-old France international will sign a four-year deal with the option of an extra year. The Athletic reported in June the central midfielder had come under consideration at Manchester United, but it was unclear how serious or advanced United’s interest had become. The 24-year-old forward will take the No. 7 shirt vacated by midfielder Missy Bo Kearns who left to join Aston Villa at the start of this month. Kapocs' arrival follows on from that of Canada international Olivia Smith who joined from Sporting Lisbon in July for a club record fee €250, 000 (£212, 000). “I’m really excited to bring Cornelia in. She is very different to what we’ve got up front, she can play wide and can play down the middle, " Liverpool manager Matt Beard said of the Sweden under-23s player. “Her goalscoring record is fantastic, she got 18 goals last season, her movement is great and she’s a very intelligent player, so I think the fans can be excited at what she can bring to the table, and we are excited to have her here. "We need to progress the team, create that competition and to have all these players now who can play in the frontline it’s a headache for me but it’s also fantastic for me. "
