Georgia beat Armenia 6-1 on Sunday evening but the game was marred by heated post-match scenes that saw objects thrown and supporters flooding onto the pitch. Tensions boiled over after the final whistle and videos posted on social media showed hundreds of punters jumping over seats and hurdling the barriers around the field. Other unsavoury clips showed spectators hurling missiles at sections of the crowd. Armenian journalist Robert Ananyan claimed Georgian supporters were responsible for tossing objects at their rivals after their side's defeat in Tbilisi. Police and stewards were forced to step in to defuse the situation. After the game, tensions ran high in the stadium, with Georgian fans storming the field and throwing objects toward Armenians. This match was part of the UEFA… pic. twitter. com/tcq Y3ab QX6 The reasons behind the surprise fracas are not known. Indeed, the two nations announced their shared bid to co-host the 2029 U-20 World Cup last week. However, supporters initially seemed to trespass on the pitch to ask for shirts from players and to take pictures with them, including Georgian ace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. It remains to be seen whether either of the sides are punished by UEFA but a potential scenario could see Georgia handed a stadium ban for their role in the incident. They next face Turkey and Bulgaria in World Cup qualifying matches in September. Kvaratskhelia, who joined Ligue 1 giants PSG from Napoli in a big-money January move, netted his country's sixth goal against Armenia. Georges Mikautadze, Giorgi Chakvetadz and Otar Kiteishvilli were also on the scoresheet, wrapping up an emphatic 9-1 aggregate victory. The result also meant Georgia will remain in League B of the Nations League next season while Armenia, despite finishing second, are rooted in League C.
