But it sets up a fascinating second leg for sure. Nick Cushing had a really successful period at his first spell at City and then left and worked in America for a number of years. But he knows the club and a good chunk of the players, certainly staff around the place so he seems to have fitted in seamlessly. They didn't get the win in the Cup final at the weekend but it is sort of unprecedented to have four games in a row against Chelsea. It was always going to throw up some different results. FT: Man City 2-0 Chelsea Manchester City After presenting a calm figure on the touchline for 90 minutes, Nick Cushing released his emotions once the final whistle blew. With a beaming smile on his face, Cushing applauded the Manchester City fans as he walked around the Joie Stadium with a beaming smile on his face. "For me it was about making sure we could compete against the top teams. To win trophies, you have to beat the best, " said Cushing. "We have to be a threat in every phase of the game and have that presence. It's how you win tight and critical games. For someone like Steph, she is a legend of not just Manchester City but England as well, she had a really tough end to her career with the Achilles injury that hampered her. It mean't she got left out of the England squad and found it hard to find game time. For her to be brought back, I think it gives everyone a big lift. Everybody will know her around the place and she can be a fantastic addition to the staff. I'm not sure what role she is in exactly but I think for the club to have her back onboard is a stroke of genius. It makes a lot of sense and it looks like it has had a really positive impact already. FT: Man City 2-0 Chelsea Manchester City With two more matches to come against Chelsea in the next week, it's a good job Nick Cushing says he embraces the tactical battle of coming up against Sonia Bompastor. As well as making tweaks to their formation and encouraging his players to be more aggressive, he has added to his coaching staff - with former England captain Steph Houghton on the touchline with him on Wednesday. "It's not ideal to come in mid-season. It's definitely not ideal to come in five days before a cup final, to play a team four times in a row and one that hasn't lost, " said Cushing. "But the greater the challenge, the more exciting it becomes. We lost the final which was incredibly difficult - but we won tonight and we roll on to the next one. Supporters at Joie Stadium revelled in Wednesday's win over Chelsea, and so did interim boss Nick Cushing. After enduring a painful defeat in Saturday's League Cup final - having had just five days to prepare - Cushing had to lift his side to face the same team again in the Women's Champions League quarter-finals. He did more than lift them, guiding them to a remarkable 2-0 win at Joie Stadium, thanks to a double from substitute Vivianne Miedema. Cushing released his emotions after full-time and stayed back to soak up the plaudits as they sang 'Blue Moon' and chanted "City, City, City". The second legs for the top two matches take place on Wednesday, 26 March with the other two games a day later. The semi-finals have the first legs on 19 and 20 April with the second legs a week later. Maybe the only positive thing from the night is we have a second leg. We will play at home and when there is hope you need to believe it will be possible. We need to analyse the game and put the right elements in the next two games to make sure we have a better result. "I need to watch the game again to analyse but I told my players we need to start the game from the beginning. We didn't start the way we wanted. In that context we gave hope to City and they felt it was possible to get a result against us. " On if it's tough playing Man City in four successive games: "We have the quality in the squad. We have the depth to play them four times and manage that situation. I am still confident even if it's tough. Everyone is disappointed but my job is to make sure going into the next game in every training session we work as hard as we can. " On how she keeps her squad happy: "It's my job to make sure everyone turns around and focuses on what we can control now. " On the uphill battle to stay in the Champions League: "We said our ambitions at the beginning of the season and we won't change that. Our ambitions are still there. That is the first time we have been beaten, so that is not a drama. It is a big competition for us and we want to go deep in every competition. We still have one game to reverse the situation and there is still hope for us. " FT: Man City 2-0 Chelsea Chelsea have won the Women's Super League in each of the past five seasons, but have never won the Women's Champions League, losing 4-0 to Barcelona in the 2021 final. Sonia Bompastor replaced Emma Hayes as boss in the summer and Chelsea are unbeaten in the Women's Super League, eight points clear at the top. But Bompastor still believes her side can salvage the Champions League in next Thursday's second leg at Stamford Bridge. At times we did that really well today. We missed a lot of big chances on Saturday but showed we have worked on it in training and hopefully we can take it to another level on Sunday and Thursday. Defeat ended the visitors' 31-game unbeaten streak - stretching back to last May - and was Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor's first with the club since joining from Lyon. Substitute Miedema made the difference for City after coming on at half-time, taking her Women's Champions League goal tally to 31 in 35 games. The Dutch striker thumped the ball into the roof of the net from close range for the opener on the hour mark, and confirmed victory with her second in the 88th minute. It meant City got instant revenge for Saturday's 2-1 defeat by Chelsea in the Women's League Cup final at Pride Park. The hosts were the stronger side in the second half and deserved their reward, having built pressure and tested Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton with shots from distance. Women's Super League leaders Chelsea did not offer much going forward until late and were wasteful when they did get into good positions.
